How to paint Harley tanks and fenders

I'm going to shoot my friends tank and fenders with single stage Hot Rod Flatz. Any tips on how to set everything up to shoot?

I was going to hang everything, but after priming that way I found it's hard to shoot even coats with the parts hanging. It's almost like I should shoot the underside of the fenders and tank first and then set right side up after they dry and then shoot the tops.

Haaa!!!! i got a barn full of horses and none are mine...lol. actually i hang my tanks. For the fenders i have empty square gallon cans like clear or reducer comes in. I fill them with sand and sit them on a table in my booth. The fenders fit right on them. After the whole paintjob is done i undercoat the undersides of the two fenders.

i have paint stands. simple 1x1 square stock. simple to make. if its a 2 piece tank, i hang the tank by both mounting points. they wont move around much. but. u dont need to really worry about the backside of the fender as much. and the underside use undercoating like jim said or i use rattle can bedliner from the local autoparts store.

also if its stock harley paint and it has the factory pinstripes. u need to sand them out and primer. they will ghost back even if u sand flat and dont break through.

undercoating is the standard. ive painted a TON of bikes and ive only painted the underside once... cuz it was a show bike. but ur standard custom run of the mill bike job. undercoat or bedliner.

Tried many methods over the years to set up bike parts and finally decided to end all the BS. These stands are made from 3/4" EMT tubing, (cheap) the thin wall electrical conduit. I can rotate the parts around and stay on one side, less moving around for me. The rig on the fat bobs also rotates in two directions. They work great, should have done it years ago.

man haning some parts is the only way to go...... i had to spray rootbeer candy on the front and back of a tank... i wonder how that would have gotten done if i wasnt a horse thieve.

I guess after all these years i am used to hanging everthing. My booth has been modified with a hook system so i makes it very easy. Sportbike parts can be very awkward an i think its the only way to go for those. Now where i wish i had a stand system is when it comes to buffing.

that would be pretty rad... a way to hold the parts so u can buff them by urself. but that will probably never happen... 2 hand method with a partner to hold or good old one hander on the buffer other on part... or the 3 inch but that takes too long..
