Is This Compressor Good Enough?

I ran a box store compressor for years, but once i got into a small media blaster and a blasting cabinet, had to upgrade the compressor to a Champion 7.5hp. Wow what a difference, slow rpms,,,chug chug chug, hardly any water, etc. The only problem is it dimmed the lights at the house when it started, so I had to run another larger triplex wire to the house from the street to solve the voltage drop issue. Now things are good.
Once you've been there, you know. Nothing beats a nice big compressor. My 7.5HP Baldor motor runs an underdriven Saylor-Beall 10HP pump. Both were used when I got them 10 years ago, and I expect they'll last as long as I want them to.

When I was young, my Dad built a lot of lumber and veneer mills, so he always had a lot of used equipment laying around. He put together a compressor from a 75HP pump driven by a 10HP motor mounted on a 120 gallon tank. I don't remember what RPM he had the pump turning, but I will never forget the sound of the compressor turning over about 10 times then shutting off. That compressor never ran a minute at a time, no matter what you were doing:)

Ended up going with the 5 hp 60 gallon ingersoll. I’ll try and find some moisture solutions as you guys have mentioned. 2 hr drive ahead of me now. Wonder how I’m unloading this lol.
Hope you are happy with it. I like mine, works fine for a hobbiest.
I had the same problem when I got home , no helpers were available. Ended up using a cherry picker, but it was dicey.

Yea for my temporary garage setup I think it will do. Once I move and get a nice 2 car (minimum) garage I’ll get fancy with the set up. I’ve already informed the mrs that her car will be parked outside.

with the cfm that the compressor puts out, surprisingly a great air dryer is the harbor freight refrigerated. i think its good for 21cfm or there abouts. you cant beat it for the price of it. i know a couple people who have it and it has lasted them years. last i checked it was under 400 bucks and you can prob get it on sale once in a while for even less

I have one of those dryers. Some of the best money I have spent. Never a moisture problem.

That will definitely be on the list for future purchases then. I appreciate the suggestion. Just purchased the air cam 2 and arrow desiccant. Hoping that will be enough to do 2-3 passes of epoxy primer

Yeah all the big box store compressors and even some of the cheaper “high end” compressors turn high rpm. Which like stated run hot and make water. But you can make them work. I have for years. I’ve had the 2stage “5hp” 80 gallon IR from tsc for prob 7 years now? Had same spec Husky before that. Both never gave me problems. Replaced motorcycle capacitor on husky once. But they’re loud and make lots of water. In the middle of putting a aftercooler between pump and tank with water separator and auto drain to try and kill most of it before it hits the tank. Should help a lot. Should finish it up tomorrow. Then really I should get dryer from HF. I wish they had them in store. I have parts I have to paint asap I’m sure shipping on dryer isn’t too speedy. Oh well, future plan is to get a bigger low rpm compressor for main shop and put this one in small garage. Maybe a Eaton. We’ll see. Until then I make water!

i have that same compressor as well chris. it was my first. its a good unit but it does spin super fast and make a ton more water than my eaton. my buddy has the same one as well and serves him good. def need a refer dryer with it though. i had a camair 10lb desiccant dryer on mine and it would literally fill with water in 30-60 min of use here in the nj summers.

my champion ran at 1750 , i bought it rebuilt in 82 and had it freshened up 20 years ago . i thought it was oiling but maybe not. going to freshen it up and run it .

I rebuilt my compressor 3 years ago using only the old 80Gal tank. 7.5HR Baldor Motor and the Eaton Pump that can be run with a 10HR electric motor. 20180724_174200.jpg20180724_172632.jpg20180724_172557.jpg

Unfortunately, you can do this build anymore for a reasonable price. I got the pump for just over $600. It is $1,595.00 from the same place now.

Yes slow is key. My eaton runs a 10hp pump with a 7.5 hp motor geared down so it spins much slower
I'm running a 4cylinder 15hp pump with a 7.5hp motor, the compressor is specifically built to my specs as it wasn't a standard order. The guy at the company talked to me and said, wow you must want this compressor to last forever. He stated he wished that everybody would order them like that but nobody want's to pay for the big 4cylinder pump.

I don't remember what the CFM is but even though it pumps really slow the thing is a beast, between that and my over 500 gallons of air storage I can have a guy sand blasting and a few guys working in the shop and we don't have any air loss issues at all.

My tanks are in series so they tend to work as big water traps as well, kind of a neat setup. Even if it's way overkill.

Yeah the ir compressors are like that which is why they are such water pumps. They just generate so much heat.

If you dont mind throwing a few more dollars at it then northern has a 5hp quincy which would be good. Appears to have a baldor motor but hard to tell. Free shipping
I got my quincy at Northern tool. It was about 1800 bucks of I recall. I got it about 10yrs ago. Zero problems. It does have a Baldor motor

For a home hobbyist that will be fine. And yeas they put out a lot of water. However... get an in-line water separator, a desiccant dryer (I have one from Princess Auto/HF), and a disposable one that attaches to the gun. I’ve spray a few cars with my Campbell-Hausfeld cheater five hp and it worked okay but would want to run almost continuously when spraying. A another remedy is to plumb in a used mini radiator used I think for car air conditioning you could get from a wrecking yard. Air line from compressor, mini radiator, air tank. The pulls from the compressor will blow enough air through the radiator to condense the water in the compressed air so it drops to the bottom of the tank and let’s the air dry more.

A couple of years back I had to get a tire repaired at my local tire shop. Pulled into their parking lot and saw a compressor under a tarp. Asked about and the manager said it was a couple of months out of warranty and they just replaced it with a new one. Capacitors were blowing and they repairs guys would only service if brought to their shop. It was a DeVillbis 7.5 HP with max pressure 175. I paid $400, though I probably could have gotten it for $200, popped in my truck and took it to the service shop. Asked them to go over everything which cost me another $400. Now I have a VERY good compressor which retails for around $4500cdn for $800! So look around and hopefully you find a deal like I did...

The 60 gal Quincy has been a good one for what little work I ask of it. Keeps up with blasting and spraying, shuts off in the middle of either activity. It’s quiet, and American made.
