Is This Compressor Good Enough?

I am planning to spray my 280z with epoxy primer since it has already been dustless blasted to protect it from new rust while I continue body work. I received a DeVilbiss Finishline 4 about a year back as a gift. As I get to ordering primer, I realize all the spec requirements needed to spray epoxy primer properly. I found this 5 HP 80 Gallon compressor used for $550 somewhat local and wanted to know if this is a good purchase.

Probably. Compressors aren't cheap. Enough cfm to do what you need to do. Keep oil checked and drain tank every day. I think those are around 1100.00 at T/S.

Yea after seeing prices for compressors (have never noticed) I would not be able to get a new one with the correct cfm. I will be making the short road trip today to pick this one up.

that is a 3hp compressor rated as 5 hp. a true 5hp motor is heavy as hell and twice the size . will work just ok with a single user but it will make a lot of water .

I am new to everything compressor related. Can you advise me with the proper solution for the water issue to make this set up work ? Or would it be a lost cause?

16cfm is ok but it will run constantly with a spray gun or orbital. that is assuming of course those #'s are accurate and not inflated. 16 cfm is about right for 5hp but shine is right, that motor looks really small. i find it hard to believe that it will put 16 cfm out by looking at it. i just bought a real 3hp motor for my booth fan last week and even that was prob 50% larger than the one on that compressor.

What cfm should I be expecting from a true 5hp?

right around 16 like it says. just by looking at the motor though i kinda question if their specs are correct. compressor companies like to play games with their #'s. they could be somehow including the built up tank pressure in that spec instead of what the pump is really putting out. again this by appearance of that motor. nothing more so i could be wrong. pics can be deceiving.

I bought this one last spring:
It has no problem keeping up with any of my spray guns or air tools.
I'm happy with it.
It does put out a lot of water, but I have good systems in place to deal with that.
I just happened to stop by a tractor supply on my way to purchase the OP compressor. I gravitated to that exact same compressor you linked. I might be pulling the trigger on the ingersoll 60gallon instead

The way you can tell if a compressor is a real 5HP is that the motor will run around 1750RPM, and the pump will run around half of that. Ones that go faster are just overdriven 3HP compressors, and will be lower performing, noisier, and shorter-lived.

Yeah the ir compressors are like that which is why they are such water pumps. They just generate so much heat.

If you dont mind throwing a few more dollars at it then northern has a 5hp quincy which would be good. Appears to have a baldor motor but hard to tell. Free shipping

Ended up going with the 5 hp 60 gallon ingersoll. I’ll try and find some moisture solutions as you guys have mentioned. 2 hr drive ahead of me now. Wonder how I’m unloading this lol.

look on the motor at the hp rating . if it says SP it is cheap Chinese 3hp . either of my 5hp motors are hell to lift . about 40 lbs .

Prob more than that shine. I just got a 3hp marathon and that was 85lbs. My 7.5 leeson i just bought for the compressor was 190lbs. Either way, yes a good motor will be super heavy.

that hook on top aint for looks . this is a true 5hp motor . the difference is this will pump up / go off / cool down / comeback on while you work .

ok ok here's something to reference size .

I ran a box store compressor for years, but once i got into a small media blaster and a blasting cabinet, had to upgrade the compressor to a Champion 7.5hp. Wow what a difference, slow rpms,,,chug chug chug, hardly any water, etc. The only problem is it dimmed the lights at the house when it started, so I had to run another larger triplex wire to the house from the street to solve the voltage drop issue. Now things are good.
