Iso clumping? Newbie question...

Hey Guys,

I had a question that I was wondering if you could help with...

I am getting back into painting and just built a nice setup. I got compressor with 50 ft of copper 1/2 lines with drops that goto a Devilbiss QC3 filter, everything high flow fittings etc...Spray gun I went with the Iwata LPH 80 with 1.2 with the E4 cap.

I am painting indoor, in a climate controlled area.

My question is in the past I used to paint with about 26-28 PSI on my old guns, I forget what I used back in the day.

This gun says 14 PSI inlet on the aircap which seems awfully low? However I see people on youtube spraying at higher PSI so I am not sure what I should have this gun set at.

I am only painting small parts. I am getting nice results with basecoat, however it is going on dry...I tried shooting some basecoat at 14psi and got much wetter results.

When I get the to clearcoat SPI Production clear at 28 PSI it looks beautiful. However I am getting little clear strings. Is this the gun overatomizing the clearcoat creating clumps?

Thanks!

I think you have it figured out; the miniguns use a lot less air pressure than the full-size guns.
Play with air to make it spray each item as you want, but you should never be anywhere near 28lbs.

Also if I recall JimC has about a dozen
80 model guns.

i do have a few mini guns, both sata and an lph80 with a 1.0tip. not quite a dozen though lol. i think iwata across the board you need to run more air psi than they recommend. i would run it around 20psi. you shouldnt need to go higher than that though.

Thanks for your advice!

I tried experimenting around today with some new parts. I shot the basecoat at 14psi and it went on nicely. Weird, at 14psi it barely feels there is any pressure...

I tried shooting the clear at 14psi and it I didn't like it at all. I felt like I had to hose it on and go slow to get proper gloss level. I upped the pressure on my second coat to 20 psi and that seemed to be much better...

I did get dieback, not sure if I overapplied the first coat...Gotta keep experimenting around
