IWATA LPH 400 1.4 SETTINGS NEEDED

I think you need to tape some paper to the wall so you can shoot some test patterns. I run mine at close to 30 lbs and about 2 1/2 turns out on the fluid mixture but I will bet the next three guys who post will set their's differently. None of us will be right or wrong, just doing what we are comfortable with and what seems to work for us.

Same settings I use.

I appreciate the help guys, I have been running 2 turns out and 28 lbs but get too much dry spray so I will put some paper on the wall and do some test sprays. I am sure I need to turn the fluid out a little more.

I've tried alot of different settings but I always come back to 2.5 turns out on fluid.

I don't want to derail but where do you guys run your fan knob? No one has mentioned that yet and I've been experimenting.

The fan pattern is one of the reasons to tape some paper up for a test.. You want a nice long flat pattern that is not hour glass shaped. When running different pressure settings sometimes the fan shape can become distorted. Personally, I trigger the gun, adjust the fan open until it is as wide as it will go and then close it until I can just see it beginning to narrow. I always then do a quick trigger on the piece of paper to make sure I like the pattern.

I had a friend once who would turn his cap to shoot a horizontal pattern, hold the trigger for a few seconds and make sure the paint started to run evenly down the paper from left to right. I personally have never gotten in the habit of doing this but it would tell you if you had an equal and balanced fan.

if you want to use lph400 lv for clear, you need to play with fan. for me it was impossible to spray clear with full fan. the best result i got closing the fan knob all they way in, and open 2 turns out. gave me nice strong wet pattern

I used the lph 400 last week to spray a trunk lid and tried several settings and it is not fast enough for the way I like to spray. I am going to buy a sata 5000 rp as this is what I had before and really like.

If you can spring for the 5500 RP I think it’s worth it over the 5000, just a thought.

The Iwata is definitely geared for a slower more deliberate application.
I shoot my clear with no reducer for the first couple of coats.
Fluid 3-3.5 turns out, 26-27 PSI at the gun with trigger full open.
Reduce pressure to 22-24 for base coat.

Do you spray with the 5500? If so what tip size and what nozzle pattern?

I have an RP with 1.2 l nozzle, I have the 1.3 l as well from when I bought the gun. I like the 1.2 better but I have never used that gun on a complete, 5-6 panels is the most I’ve done.

I absolutely like it with the new Speed clearcoat, slick finish and don’t have to worry about hangers with it.

Have you sprayed Universal or Euro 5000 with it? I had a 1.3 tip on the 5000 rp and it was great for SPI high solids clear, A friend of mine sprays medium solids clear with his whatever gun he uses but he can not spray SPI high solids with his gun.

I live in Canada so don’t get to spray the Euro 5000 or 4000 Universal.

Since I got the 5500 I don’t pick up the 5000 RP that often. When I need to spray SPI matte black the 5000 1.3 works great for that.
I should try it with the new Speed clear and the Universal again.
