Keep it going

I'm an old fart gearhead. Have built a lot of cars and bikes in my 6 decades on this earth. When I was in school, the only computer was as big as a washing machine, and you talked to it with Xs and Os. I'm not computer literate at all. My daily driver truck was a Magazine feature, 6 pages in the February 2012 issue of Diesel World magazine. I have always had a forum or two I check daily, this is now the only one. I have been concerned that the thread count is getting less and less. There is so much good information and advice on here I am worried sick it could fade away. There have been a few I have been a member of that are now gone. One in particular had it's last post in May. I appreciate the folks who can document and post their progress and trials on here. I want the regular contributors to know how much I appreciate their skills and willingness to share it with a dumbass like me. There are not many places where you can go to get the kind of expertise and experience you have available here. There are always folks who have no experience who join a forum and become experts in a couple weeks. I went to a major diesel truck event, where my truck was photographed for the magazine, and met a dude who I had been following on a forum....he was about 17. I thought "I have burned enough diesel fuel to float a battleship and have been looking to him for guidance". You can't tell over the screen who you are talking to. Barry and his crew are very rare in this day and age and cannot be thanked enough. I have always had friends do my paint work after I did the metal and construction, they are all now retired or dead, therefore I have been tasked to do it for myself. Sorry for the long rambling post, but I wanted to say thanks and if no one posts, where are we headed? I'm going to do my best to figure out an easier way to get pictures from my phone onto my PC so you all can have some comic relief.

I simply do as Chris suggests and email pictures from by phone to my computer and then save them to a file.
Taking many pictures during a project is helpful for reassembly as well. I post my projects on sites like this one, so others can see just how involved the process of restoring a vehicle can be. Plus they can learn from all my mistakes and adventures.
I too appreciate the pros on here and their assistance in times of difficulty or indecision. Great bunch.

As for the post numbers dwindling, I think a lot of that has to do with how few people are interested in doing their own work these days. I tried hiring a young man to help me a couple of times now. None have lasted a full day! Their complaint was, "this is a lot of hard work."

I think it's just a sad fact that this kind of forum format has less appeal to younger people, especially in an age of so many choices of social media. But most of us are committed to staying here and helping. In my opinion, even if forums are considered outdated, they are still one of the best ways to do Q and A about technical topics, so in our case I don't think they will ever totally go away.

One thing that sort of concerns me is that there are not a lot of Google Search hits to this site when I search a term like "SPI epoxy," for instance. The fix for that is well above my paygrade, though.

I know a guy that builds websites. He said that typing in a series of words that deals with every aspect of your business will increase hits. He said to type the words on the main page but hide them by typing them in the same color as your background.

Personally, I don't have the technical ability to say whether it works or not but it might be something worth looking into.

Forums are actually making a comeback. Social media sites like Facebook are terrible for serious folks, and you only see the latest topic, no way to search for all the accumulated wisdom. I'm on a few Facebook groups related to autobody and paint. Most of it is trash, but a few good tidbits here and there.
What is interesting is how often SPI gets mentioned when people ask about Epoxy and Clear.
I think I will post links to this forum now and then so the serious folks can find it.

hiding the letters in the same color background was a trick from 15-20 years ago. it would make your ranking on google skyrocket because google used how many times a word is repeated to pick how relevant your page is to the search being done. unfortunately that got so popular and google caught on after only maybe a year or so. now if your text is the same or similar as the background then your site is actually penalized for this. google put an end to that many years ago.

Right now I think it's easy to think the forum is fading because we're headed into winter and painting projects stop for many of us. Then the warm months come and the threads and questions pick up once again. It's a fairly small group of regular contributors here but it is a friendly group and one of the only places I go to or consider reliable information for paint and body info.

I agree on previous comments that Facebook is not a good forum. It IS good if you need an answer fast, but the quality of answers tends to be low and there are a lot of trolls and morons. One dumbass tried telling me the black epoxy wasn't UV stable and he was even a jobber. I had to post a screen shot of Barry telling me that in text, and the moron then changed his stance again and said 'well nobody uses it for that, and just because it is doesn't mean you should do it.'

Thanks Jim.
I think your answer is giving my age away though. ;)

Facebook paint forums are for entertainment. SPI forum is for accurate information and guidance.
