let's talk sanding

i'm about out of paper so it is time to make some decisions . like everyone else i'm a little fed up with 3m . i've been using norton / eagle .
i like using multiple grades for finishing.
1000
1200
1500
2000
2500
3000

i know many will grab 1500 then go to 3000 . that's ok but it does not suit me. i have found over the years that i use less paper if i dont ask too much from it.
i am leaning towards the norton system right now. i may still buy the trizac 5000 but maybe not .
so what are you using ? i'm talking full finish not collision .

i'm wanting to try the norton ice . i've used a lot of norton. the plant here used to throw out a lot . i have an icebox full of board paper .

I've switched to Indasa for the coarser grits like 1000 and 1500 and they work just fine, Nikkens still gets my vote for the finer grits like 2000 and 2500-I think the grit is sized well/more uniform than most of the other brands, and after that it's 3M trizac 3000 and 5000. Eagle's 3000 is really good IMO but no suppliers in my area, maybe I should just make a big order and be set for awhile...

looks like you can get norton on amazon . they also sell small paks for those who don't use a lot .

Question from a newbie. How many 9x11 sheets of the Black Ice paper, of a particular grit would it take to wet sand a, let's a 4' x 4' area. I'm trying to figure out how much I need to buy.

each 9x11 will give you 2 working sheets wrapped on a foam block or 4 strips for a hard block. buy small packs and if you run out order more. takes a while to use 50 sheets . same with disc . if you can find a supplier they will sell by the sheet .

for what my opinion's worth, which aint much at all, (I've been indoctrinated by Shine in how he sands so I do it the same)...I had all Meguiar's UniGrit paper for 1000, 1500, 2000, and 2500, and Trizact 3000. The Unigrit is the Nikkens that Bob speaks of. It's pretty good and last a long time. However I bought Indasa because I forgot how much I liked their paper for blocking, and it's dirt cheap. 50 sheets of Indasa was the same price as 25 sheets of Unigrit. And it feels like it cuts better, even than the 1000, so I just stopped with the 1000 altogether since I don't really have much of any peel on the car and am just sanding out dirt nibs mostly.

But I LOATHE wet sanding. I hate it so much and it takes me forever. I am how you can drag cutting and buffing a car through an entire spring, summer, and fall, and still not have it done, although I was doing other things on it too. I know Shine likes the Eagle paper for 'dry' DA. I'd like to try this method so if anybody has any input I'm all ears.

I actually just ordered 1000,1500,2000, and 2500 wet bufflex all in eagle to give it a shot a couple days ago, I will still follow that up with 3000&5000 trizact when I'm done. I have been working at switching away from 3m cause not only are they getting out of hand but so is my local jobber(only one for about 40 miles) I am still using 3m gold on my file boards as I haven't found anything else comparable, yet.... I will try and post an update on the finishing films when I get a chance.

How does the indasa stuff hold out? I am still looking for 80-600 DA paper as well, seems the 3m gold just wins....

Oh and all my sanding currently is dry up to the trizact and its not like traditional wet Sandi g either.

I use Indasa 80, 120, 180. and 320 grit board paper on a roll, some 40 grit file/board sheets and 80,180,320,400 DA paper-it works just fine for me and at 1/3 the cost of 3M gold. Their 2000 grit DA paper seems to work just fine too, I was a little leery trying it but haven't seen any problems. I've switched to the Norton Blaze roloc discs at half the price of 3M and they seem to last just as long.

I'll have to give it a shot then Bob. The last 80 sheet roll of gold I bought was about $45-$50 bucks and it goes quick once you're rolling along.

excessive speed kills paper quick. by simply turning down the air your paper will last longer and the tool will be much easier to control .

Yes sir. I had read in a post of yours I believe that you run your air down on your sanders, I tried it and love it, I think I set mine about 45 pounds and the sander flat out, it works better all around I think.

Now I just need to t off after my dryer so I can run one reg for air tools and the other for guns.

Just finished cutting with the eagle finishing films, 1000, 1500, and 2000, then moved to 2500 wet bufflex, then on to 5000 trizact. I must say, the eagle finishing films last just as long if not longer than the 3m stuff and at about half the cost. The dry films are def the way to go for sure.

I like Meguiars unigrit (nikkins) paper the best.
One thing I've learned, I use two or more pieces at a time
and let one sit in a bucket of soapy water while using
the other, I keep switching back and forth, it seems to
rejuvenate it to let it sit in the soapy water a while.

I got really disappointed when the eagle paper came in with boxes marked made in china. I got a hand pad that they had marked made in Georgia. Just being an american business, all this overseas crap pisses me off. I mean I liked the fact that the 1000 and 1500 grit discs were cheaper than the 2000 grit, where 3M was all the same price, but I guess if I knew I would have never ordered it.

Has anybody had their hands on USC paper? Supposedly the guy that has been designing their paper was they guy from Eagle.. I tried a few sheets of Gold as a sample and really liked it.. I may be adding the line but waiting for a rep to show up to discuss.

-----@--------- by us chemical has been around a long time . are you talking about the orange paper or the synwave ? i think they have 2 lines now. be pretty hard to switch me from eagle .

I heard the same thing Chad. Has anyone compared the bufflex black against the 3m 3000?

I use the crap out of the green. I believe that is the key in the whole process, for me atleast. But going through almost a box per car of the 3m is getting old...lol. But in order for the 3m 3000 to work correctly you really have to use it up. Since I just bit the bullet and realized that, my buffing has gotten a lot easier and went a lot quicker.
