looking for more sparkle

Have picked out a tangerine pearl color for my 34 street rod but want a little more pop than it is giving me. Thinking about a intercoat with some fine metalflake. Any suggestions about what this will look like or what color of flake would look best. Thanks for any ideas.

I'd modify the tangerine before adding another stage to the job. Pearls are normally a ground coat plus a midcoat, so adding more basecoat thickness is probably not a great idea. A custom color might be created that uses coarser pearls, there is also an orange metallic in many mixing systems. You'd need access to the mixing system toners, or buy some dry pearls online and make your own midcoat with the original formula as the starting point.

Repairability of custom colors can be difficult if you don't carefully document your formula.

Thanks shine didnt think of that.assuming you meant to mix some of the pearl base in the intercoat. Will that give more pop you think?

yes. the toner in colors can lay over pearls and subdue them . other times the pearl is so intense it cancels its self out. meaning so much pearl it looses it's pop. start with a little to see what you want. but measure it ! if you need a repair later you will know what to do .

if it were me i would take the orange you had and mix a gold xirillic pearl into it. these are the coarser more reflective pearls on most paint systems. you should be able to give it some pop without it getting it looking like a disco ball....unless thats the look your going for.

Yes Jim I am not looking for a pronounced metal flake just a little more sparkle than I am getting from the std mix. Is the coarse flake going to be too visible you think? I definitely am not looking for the bass boat look. Thats why I chose a pearl but it does not have the sparkle I am looking for.

I have added metal flake right to black basecoat to get a deep blue. Basecoat, intercoat, some can say they are the same animal. Just mix the metalflake in your reducer before you add it. Does not take much at all. Black turns blue with about 12 grams per quart. There are orange flakes and pearls out there.

Jim do you have a recommendation on which xirillic pearl to use there are a lot of pearls out there.

Paint with pearl has some metallic candys that have small flakes, just metallic. Their micro flake is .004 and will spray thru a 1.8 real nice, but its pretty big and gives alot of flake when you use it in clear, alot less in the color. Their orange copper is real nice. The holographic stuff is real rainbowy. I used that with bags of the copper orange pearl. The only recommendation is to buy all you will need because follow up batches are not very consistent. that xirillic was extra pearl, not much addition of metal flake at all. What color flake did you want as the metallic, silver or gold?

larry, there are only a few xirillic pearls. red, white, gold, blue, green and copper i think. these dont give you that smooth pearl look. they are more coarse more the size of a med metallic. they will be in almost every paint line. im not sure what brand your using. i can give you #s if your using basf or wanda but i dont know what they are in other lines. hok has them dry as well but easier to stick with your line. here is a link to some pictures of a truck i did. there are some closeup pics of the paint so you can see the flake easily.

It would be a good idea to mix up more than you need to have leftovers for repairs.

Wow Jim that is a beautiful truck. Very impressive. Thanks for your help.

about what percentage do you use? We just wanted to add pearl to the rally stripes on the camaro and tried a few different and the xirillic was just way too much.

I've done some spray-out cards with HOK Sparks FX63 pearl VS TheCoatingStores.com Screamin xirallic Sp06 Red in HOK KK red dye and SPI intercoat.
They look identical. The sparkle and color hue are the same. You could try the gold powder for $20 and see if you like it.
I also started with HOK FX Kosmatic Styling Pearl FX32 mixed with the KK red and intercoat, and this has a standard pearl look. The xirallic definitely has more pop to it.
I'll try and get some pictures posted of my sprayouts if interested.

most oem pearl or metallic formulas now days have some xirillic pearl in them. how much you add is entirely up to you. no rules and every formula is different. if its too much then put less. its no different than any other pearl only with a grain size like a metallic and a little more reflective.
