Low voc base

Whiskyb

Last item I need before paint day is my base. PB5 was a Chrysler color that I had picked off a Nason color chart. Its a medium blue metallic.

Here in Canada we have the low voc laws or waterborne. Want to stay solvent based. I was thinking of jumping the border and buying my paint stateside but not sure of the fine if I got caught.

Browsing the yellow pages for local suppliers these are the paints offered:

PPG
Transtar
DuPont
Standox
Nason
House of Kolor
Possibly RM

Only have one gun (new lph400 silver and purple)
Homemade booth
Slow painter

Any and all opinions appreciated:confused:

Only help I can give here is I do have a bunch of the Transtar low voc base.
In stock-3 reds, 2 silvers, 1 tan, 1 light blue metallic.

Here is what I found, mixed 1:1 (their recommendation) they are all one coat coverage but I have found they spray better mixed 1:1.5 and some colors 1:2 and they are still two coat coverage.
The extra reduction made them dry a little better and made them totally child proof in spraying.

I'm sure the others would be similar.

One other note, I reduced these with SPI's low voc reducer and also used regular reducer on some, seem to make no difference in spraying or drying.

Very easy to spray, my only complaint would be is the base is slower then other bases but adding extra reducer does speed it up some.

I understand why they made it slow as it may be sprayed at 110 degrees and some of the Low Voc reducers are on the fast side from what I hear from my one jobber in San Fran.

matrix is the best bet in low voc. they have the best out the others for amount of toners and colormatching capabilities..

I think my local NAPA is getting a Matrix line soon, as much I I would like to say money is no object it always is. That being said at this point I just want the best and easiest. Sorta like the SPI of base's!

Barry. or others. Transtar No mix low voc is available locally. $430/gallon. I think that is my choice. Picking up some PB5 metallic medium blue this week. As for reducers I will call my SPI jobber and get some more SPI medium. Did you activate the base with any activators? The tech sheet says that you need it for the "LIFETIME WARRANTY" Wonder how one could make a claim on that?

First you have to use their complete line I believe to get the warranty.
Second you have to be a shop owner I believe
Third. They probably want you to be schooled before they warranty how you spray their products
Fourth,. Even if all the above applied to you, in the end, you are still going to come out on the losing end if the paint fails and they give you more of their paint free!!

Those warranties do look great in the brochures but they really are not worth much in the end. Agreed.

And the activator? Should it be used?

Activating base is really a good thing.. Especially on metallics and if you have repairs..

Id say more often than not, most do not activate their bases..

I can let you know but this is my first ever base/clear attempt. Everything else has been single stage, even my metallic singles turned out good. I think I am being over cautious here since I have so much time in this car compared to anything I have ever done before.

This will be a cake walk but just remember about the reductions I mentioned in earlier post.

They have changed their tech sheet on mixing to now state

"MIXING:
Mix 1 part No Mix Low VOC Basecoat to 1½ part 6700-F series Urethane Grade Reducer (50 State Compliant)
suitable to shop conditions and repair size.
Note: Adding additional reducer will increase V.O.C.
For Lifetime Warranty No Mix Low VOC Basecoat must be activated. Add ¼ oz of any 6800 Series Extra Solids
Activator or any 7000 series Euro Clearcoat Activator to 1 ready to spray quart of color.
Note: Recoat time of activated basecoat is 2 hours @ 77°F (25°C).
Note: For under hood, matt cladding and interior colors activate the basecoat as above"

Looks like they took your advice as well! Did you use their activator?

You know better then that!!!! Of course not, I used the good stuff! LOL

My UV clear activator will work? Instead of their reducer do you use your own? As I am typing this I feel silly but still I have to ask!

ANY clear coat activator will work, one ounce to a mixed quart.

That paint will take 0-VOC reducer or the regular reducer unless you are in California or Canada and then you must use the 0-VOC to be legal.
