Masking chrome rims to paint new smoothies?

N

NoobDude

After waiting 6 months for hoops to arrive, I finally received the chrome rim/bare centers for my GMT yesterday and want to prep and paint them today.

But I'm wondering what others may have used to cover the chrome. Tape just seems like it would be a PIA to get tight against the weld/seam. Wondering what my options are. A coat of vaseline crossed my mind briefly... very briefly.

When I'm done.
They're a new set of reversed 14" bare metal centers in 6" chrome hoops for my toyota.
Most people probably just have them powder coated but all I seem to notice is PC flaking off stuff so I wanted to go with epoxy for protection. (and I know how the metal was prepped)

I went ahead and carefully taped the parting line but just used paper to cover the majority of the hoop... mistake.
The epoxy did make it through the seam as I hoped but ran over the tape and under the paper.
So after letting the runs set up I'm carefully scraping/cutting them off the chrome.
I'll tape again using only the 1.88 to seal, instead of 3/4" and paper.

I have 3 brushed coats of epoxy on now, so I plan on a bit of sanding to smooth out a few spots, then spraying a sealer coat and SS black.

you wanted pointers on how to mask these things but no one can help without seeing pictures of the wheels and what your trying to do.

Yeah, that's what I meant...

The right kind of coated paper should not have the issue you mention.
