Matte Black

When using the single stage SPI Matte Black, if I understand correctly, you can get more shine by mixing with SPI Clear. If doing this, can you color sand it to get any dirt or runs out? If so, how do you get back to the satin finish and not have scratches or shine? From the research I have done, Im pretty much of the understanding you have to get a perfect application. Once its applied, it is what it is.

You can activate the clear then add to matte for more gloss, takes very little.

You still cannot wet-sand or buff.

Thanks Barry, always comes back to the same bottom line for me on matte black. Looks good but PIA to correct flaws or maintain.

You meant to say impossible to correct anything! LOL

But the nice thing is the matte finish will conceal some minor imperfections far better than gloss, which reveals all.

For sure, but for a low experience shooter, I need the option for a window to correct dirt and runs.

Matte black is a love/hate relationship with me.. I love how it looks but I have had to repaint a few things when using it because of dirt specs.. etc etc. It's also harder to maintain. It has it's place for sure though.

It's sprays so nice though, you'd have to try to make it run. Dirt is another story...

Interesting how some of the high end cars like Jaguar are coming out with a satin finish in different colors. I would expect the same issues with color that are associated with black.

Even worse, for a repair, now not only you must match the color, but the shine also.... Three stage paint was something, now this is going to be even worse. Shop temperature, reducer, hardener and painter change the final gloss, it's going to be fun.

Saw a new SL550 Sunday with matte black from factory. $120,000 and if driven everyday, something is going to have you repainting the whole car in two or three years, my best guess.

lol, not if I dont paint it that color to begin with. Im always looking for an advantage to do it, but never can convince myself. I think you guys are saving me from myself.

I was at a Subaru/Hyundai dealership not that long ago and in the show room they had a car painted in Matte Grey, I commented on it and the sales guys said they couldn't wait to see that one sold because it was impossible to keep clean, they said everybody wanted to touch it and they were having a difficulty keeping it clean from all of the greasy fingerprints.. I walked up to it and they weren't kidding.. It looked pretty bad, you could see where everybody touched it.. That would sure make for a hard sale. If it is that much grief to deal with in a dealership I surely don't want it in my driveway..

Like stated before, I love the Matte products, but I'll keep it under the hood.
