Media Blaster

A guy has come to me trying to sell his media blasting equipment. He used to restore cars but has got out of the business. its a very large Stripmasters unit that stands about 16 feet tall. it relaims the media and sifts it for reuse. im guessing its from the early 90's. my question is what is something like this worth? and with the advent of soda blasting is media blasting still desirable? it does not come with a compressor. heres a link to what it looks like minus the room. this guy built his own enclosed room in his shop. he's asking 8 grand.

mine is a diesel powered 85 cfm . not sure on the hp .

I have nowhere near that with only 15.6 CFM at 100 psi and I regret not going bigger as my air sander barely gets the job done.
I plan to renovate my shop and redo my homemade booth sometime in the future so maybe I can upgrade then.

I'm thinking of offering 4k "we are in a recession" and money is hard to come by. he said he used a diesel powered compressor that you pull behind a truck and he rented them when his went out. i figure you could get one of those from a auction? I'm not a business but i have 10,000 sf commercial building with a nice paint booth and would like to retire "Soon" and just try to make a living from it.I just don't know how profitable media blasting is and how hard it is to learn the technique?

I will say it can be quite physical of a job. I'm in my mid 30's and my hands and body can really hurt after a day of blasting. Maybe if I blasted more I would get used to it but I really don't want to get used to it. I can cut a couple loads of firewood and haul them and feel no pain but theres something about crawling around and lugging 100lb bags that kick my butt. That seems like way more of a piece of equipment than is needed to make money. You could frame a room with ventilation, buy a good Marco tank, breathe unit, 2-3k for a decent tow compressor, and reclaim your media with a scoop shovel and screen. Maintenance cost on your scoop shovel would probably be a lot less than something like that. I couldn't imagine what parts and filters could cost as those type of machines are built for unlimited company budgets.

Thanks for that insight. i could probably rent the space and make as much money with no work. mike
