Need a little help on choosing a red

Chris_Hamilton

Trying to be the best me, I can be
Which of the SPI Reds would be closest in color to this picture? I'm thinking the medium but really not sure. Barry if you could look that would be great. All other comments appreciated as well.:)

I just painted medium red. This is inside under fluorescent AND LED, but it may give you an idea. To me it looks a bit brighter, but again, lighting.

I have the red samples SPI sent me tucked away in one of my sprayout notebooks. I don't think it's really possible to tell from pictures, but I would probably be leaning to the dark red, which really isn't all that dark, imo.

SPI Dark Red

When choosing which Red to go with, I saved the img files of the different reds taken in the same lighting conditions and then opened them side by side for comparison.

I also got the chips from Barry, however they are small and it is still a difficult choice if you are not good at seeing tints like me.

Thanks guys for the pics. Just trying to get a general idea.

Chris, your car is coming along nicely. :) Couldn't help but notice the Z-car tucked away on the right. What year?

'68 that Chevy looks great! Did one of those a couple of years ago so I know how much work it took you to get it to what it is in the pic.

One more question anyone have any pics of the "SPI Red"? Does it have a red cast or an orange cast?

Thanks, Chris. The Z is not mine. I believe it is a 71 or 72, but it's not a Gen 1 (when they had 240Z behind the quarter window, not the circular Z symbol). It's an Arizona car, so very little rust. A good base for a restoration...if the garage-mate ever gets around to it.
As for the SPI red, I've read Barry saying (or agreeing to) that it is a single pigment and essentially his version of Dodge Viper red. I got chips of all of them and it was clearly different. A bit more subtle between the medium and dark, but not that one. So, slap you in the face, RED.

Chris, my opinion is the SPI reds definitely are toward the red/red with little orange. Do you not have paint chips from Barry's guys?

The engine in this picture is SPI orange and the cowl is SPI dark red. I think the picture, at least on my screen is pretty close, but a paint chip would be the way to go.

I think there was a thread with nothing but cars with SPI red.

I found an old one but it wasn't real specific as to what was what.

Thanks John. Yeah I did have some but got them for the Shop I was working for. So I can't look at them 'cause I'm not going back over there.:) I'll just ask Barry and Crew for some. Thanks for sharing the pic.

@dhutton01

The cars look great. Thanks for sharing the pics.

I left about 6 weeks ago. Day after I left I got a job (wasn't even looking for one) doing a "re-paint" on a 72 Chevy C-10. Not a complete resto (cab staying on the frame) but the guy is spending a lot of money on replacing most everything. Kinda priced it low but I figured it would be a good one to get my name in circulation as he is a prominent local businessman and has a lot of rich friends over at Smith Mountain Lake. (local lake resort area, they filmed "What about Bob" there). So been just working on that at my very modest home shop. I didn't want to do any sort of build thread with the truck but I'll post some pics when I get it done. All SPI products on that one.
Way it looks I can stay as busy as I want for the foreseeable future just working out of my home shop. Got a 69 Camaro Z28 after this one that needs a partial repair. Owner spent over $135K getting it restored (not sure where) and the sail panel has body filler cracking at the 1/4 to roof seam  I thought it was pretty cool he wanted me to repair it. After that I have a 240Z that I'm going to do. So I'm grateful to the Lord for allowing that to happen and to not have to go to the 7th level of hell everyday (Collision Center:)) to earn a living.
Thanks for asking Crash, JL.

the spi red definitely has an orange cast to it. its certainly red BUT as far as comparing one red to another, its on the orange end of the spectrum.
