I have a 1996 Monte Carlo in the shop and am getting ready to buy paint, The owner tells me that the black parts are not clear coated and that they were originally flat black. Do any of you guys have some experience as to what this black would be?

JC,

I just looked at photos of a few hundred Monte Carlo's of that vintage and saw NO black accent colors. Stock, mirrors, bumpers, "ground effects", etc were body color. Some had an accent stripe beginning under the grill, which ran down each side swooping up around each wheel well, then to the rear bumper. Some may have had a partial vinyl top. This link calls out MC available colors by year: https://montecarloss.com/SS_FAQ_3.html

Can the customer produce a pic of how he wants the car accented? I suggest having a sample of FLAT black, and another of MATT black for the customer to choose from, as many folks incorrectly call any less than shiney color "FLAT".

Best of luck,

Lance

He wants the grill, trim around windows, lower valance on front clip, Under the hood and inside the trunk in black. I will tell him to go pick out the black at the paint supplier if all else fails. Thanks for the help.

All black trim on those cars was a nearly flat black. Grille, door frames, door handles, windshield mouldings etc. Pretty much the same as other Monte's of that era. Stuff to use would be SPI Matte Black Single Stage mixed 6:1. Refer to the Tech Manual for more info.
