new base coat gun needed...maybe

right now I have the LPH400 and it's been a good gun. Seems to be spraying my base coat a little on the "light" side recently. I ordered some of the gaskets that go in the air cap hoping that fixes it. I paint just as a hobby so I don't have a bunch of guns. I feel like the lph400 is a little slow and doesn't put the base coat down like I would like for an all over. I also have customers starting to ask about these new 3 stage paints on the newer cars, they do look great ! i'm worried that the lph400 (silver cap) will not spray it as "easily" as some other guns out there( maybe a wider fan?). maybe it's just me but I watch enough car shows when they paint they have waaaay better coverage quickly than i'm getting. What is going to get me better coverage faster...tekna copper or the tekna prolite? something else ? is a wider fan better for these 3 stage paints ? it takes me forever to do a roof with the lph400...though I do like it for clear coat. It just seems the more I paint i.m wanting to spray faster...sata 5000 rp is probably out of my price range right now...just looking for a great base coat gun that will give me qick and even coverage

The LPH400, silver cap, is not a great base coat gun, especially for light metallics, pearl whites, colors like that. I still use an old 1.3 NR2000 for the difficult colors, but the prolite 1.3, or 1.4 choked down a little, with a TE20 air cap is an excellent base gun, and you can move pretty quick with it. It is ideal for completes, IMO.

Agree with Texas(as usual:)) The Sata 1.3 NR2000 is a great base gun. It will spray any metallic, candy, or pearl well. The 1.4 nozzle will do most as well. There are some on ebay but most look pretty well used. If you are patient you may be able to score a nice one but they bring quite a bit for their age. Been my experience any Sata HVLP 1.3 sprays base well. They aren't cheap but they are the best guns I've ever used for base. They are aslo very durable. I can recommend the NR2000, the Sata 4000HVLP, the 5000HVLP and the new 5500 HVLP "I". Any of those with a 1.3 nozzle will spray most everything base wise.

Here's a link to a new 5000 HVLP 1.3 on ebay. I've bought several guns from this seller. They are 100% legitimate

Those Sata's are about as bulletproof as a Hutchins DA. I can't remember how long I've had the NR2000, but I know it's been 20+ years. Replaced the needle/nozzle/air cap about 10 years ago just because I thought it was probably due, but other than that I never even take it apart. I guess I need to buy 1 of the new ones just because that 1 has definitely paid for itself many times over:)

Thanks for the help - found one
on eBay- Sata nr2000 with 1.4 tip- brand new aluminum cup - Sata air regulator. Guy went through a lot of trouble to advertise - showed spray patterns and all - $275 - don’t think I got screwed but we’ll see

Does anyone use a little gun? Sorry it is not car related, but we are trying to get a job for Tactical Lighting, aluminum boxes that need to be painted with what we refer to as a single stage white paint, not tiny, just around 18". All the mini guns just have .8 or 1.0 tips. Might need to rig a line to keep a cup off of the gun to get in with a full sized gun.

the sata 4400 you can get with up to a 1.4 tip. i have one with a 1.2 and one with a 1.4. both are great

its still a mini gun so the 1.4 doesnt put out the same amt as a full size 1.4 so dont judge tip size the same. i like my 1.4 the best.

i have an lph100 with the sidewinder cup . love this gun but would not do an all over with it . i use it for cut in or small jobs .

these are basically 12" to 18" boxes that need to be sprayed white inside, then the military color outside. So being able to get a smaller gun into the box at least a little sounds like an idea. The white reflects the light so uniform is important.

iwata has an lph50 which is even smaller than the one shine mentioned. im not sure what tip sizes are available for it but it has the rotating side mount cup that shine is talking about which is great. i had one of these prob 18 years ago then got rid of it for the lph80.
