New product

In last 15 years I have probably recommended the Upol Fade out as a blending agent 1000's of times, as it was the best out there bar none. However some of the shops that used it for years started bitching about it not working like it use to, so I bought a new can and compared to my old cans and with that said, I have formulated a blending solvent that will be the best of anything out there.

It will come in a quart activator can, so VS a spray can a whole lot more for your money.
Part number is #915-4 and shop cost is $37.33.

My rough label has been sent to printer to fine tune and once I have the labels, the product will be ready to go, should be about 30 days.

Damn, this is bitter sweet news to me bc I don't think it will be legal in Canada.

Barry, how much would it cost to stuff it in an aerosol can so that it becomes VOC exempt?

Awesome news BTW.

Nice! I've been getting great blends with 870 mixed with a little activated clear. This going to be equal or better?

Cannot be made legal, well it could but would be worthless.
This may be legal as a specialty item, not sure.
Aero cans I will never do due to losing control of final product.

Should be easier but like I ALWAYS say, the net result is what counts, not how you get there.

Can't wait to give it a try. But I bet it going to the best thing you can buy knowing Barry.

I wonder if people in VOC areas could buy the new blender and have their jobber put it in a spray bomb for them.

BTW, I will be in the market for this when it comes out, though I would bet a quart can will last me several years...

I've been thinking about getting one of the Aero filling stations because of all of the weird requests we have been getting for mixing paint into aerosol form.
Would I be able to put this into the mix station and create it in aerosol?

This is great news. What is the approximate shelf life of SPI blender?
Only two things can go wrong.

Top left off and it evaporates, or the can starts rusting from old age.

I don't really understand how putting this in a spray can could change VOC content, I may be missing something here, don't know.
Only way I know is reducing it with exempt solvents and now it would not be worth using.

We have two "state of the art spray can filling companies" within 90 miles of us, I just can't trust someone else packing our product.
We looked at an automated can filling system last year but to get the right set up was about $150,000 just for the small amount we would do and the main problem was the room it would take for the two products we would use it for. Adpro and this product.

I'm not up on the law anymore, but when I lived within the SCAQMD jurisdiction way back when, anything was legal as long as it was in a spray can. It was one of those rules designed to leave Joe Homeowner alone while making sure they could screw over shops. Things may have changed since then, I don't know.

non pro here too. correct me if i am wrong. I grew up helping dad in his weekend shop. he was painter at a dealer m-f. i just pout of high school i worked with him at a chevy dealer for 5 years.in the late 80s. i believe a blending solvent is used when you are not painting a whole panel. say a small dent on rear quarter panel. you blend your color to coverage. and dont plan on clearing whole panel. you can blend clear into a small area say c pillar or above wheel well or above the doors. let clear flash then spray blending solvent over edge of clear (where new clear meets old clear) the blending solvent "melts in" to create an invisable blend. with lacquer we used the slowest thinner we had. have been able to do it on dog leg or top of door etc. larger areas are harder to do. you need a "hot" solvent one that will bite but flash off fast. i watched dad do a blend in the middle of a box side on a brand new 86 chevy with centari acrylic enamel code 17. lacquer never matched that color you could put Centari on wet enough to just get it to start to mottle then it was a perfect match. too much mottle and the color was too dark. sorry for the rant just brought out a memory

Lax is right, say you scratch a panel putting the car together, you do a 4inch spot of base and now want to spot clear, do a coat, let set do second coat, then empty gun with out waiting and spray one medium coat of the blender over the whole spot going past where your clear stopped and it will burn in the edges, if not wait a few minutes and do a second coat if needed, should not be needed.

Barry are you recommending there be some activated clear in with the blending solvent or is a dedicated gun with just blending solvent OK?

Would this be comparable to the Sikkens SRA Reducer? I never tried the upol...always used Sikkens.

Just solvent to avoid long term bleaching of blend.
