I hope this is allowed. I am going to be attempting to paint my second full paint job, first bc/cc job. I’m going to use universal clear. My local basecoat options are Sherwin Williams dimensions and ultra. Also ppg shopline and deltron. The ultra and deltron are pricey. Looking for opinions on these brands. I’m not opposed to paying for the higher lines if it’s going to help produce a better finish/ be more user friendly.

Will be spraying gulfstream aqua from ford on a 1970 scout.

Thanks in advance.

Another option to consider is to contact Chad Sperry at Auto Rod Technologies https://www.autorodtechnologies.com/ in Michigan to see what he might be able to fix you up with in a quality base coat. Chad's a member here who has supplied numerous members with just what they need in quality paint, at very fair pricing. autorodtech@gmail.com

What will you be laying the base over and how will the surface be prepped?

I’ll check him out over the weekend and contact Monday.

I’ll either be laying the base over finish1 fp410 or ppg shopline sealer if I cut through when blocking. I’ll be sanding down to 400-600 depending what the basecoat calls for.

Use SPI epoxy reduced down as a sealer and enjoy numerous benefits of doing so.

I just ordered 7 quarts of Motobase from Chad for the Dart's exterior, interior and stripe.

If you use PPG for color I would go with Deltron, it will be more expensive but coverage will be much better than Shopline. I've never sprayed the Shopline Plus so I don't have experience with it.

I've just used a lot of PPG because I used it at tech school and when I worked at collision shop for several years so that is what I was use to spraying. I'm sure there are good quality base coats that are cheaper.

Depending on color red for example. In shopline plus will take 4 coats to cover 400 grit. Just sprayed some last week. Sprayed dbc today and it covered in damn near 1 coat. After 2 it was a done deal. You have to factor in more than just costs. 4 or 5 coats leaves alot more chance for error or mishap. Hose slapping car. Sweat dripping. Hairs. Bugs. Plus time. If a gallon of X brand takes 4 coats and costs 275 a gallon. But X1 brand covers in 2 coats and is 450...in the grand scheme of a 40k car....that 200 or so dollars gets washed out anyways...

Yea, Chad says Motobase covers like ink and that is not an exaggeration. The sky blue I got from him one coat totally covered the coverage card (or whatever it is called). Two was just to feel good about it. SPI base is just as good. The crap Nasson single stage I got from the local place is the most translucent crap I have never seen.

Was 1 fear I had of going with the “budget line”. I’m assuming you get what you pay for when it comes to the metallics being stable as well?

With a sealer beforehand. How much base would you recommend having on hand for a scout without the top?

Im still very much an amateur and i dont paint cars for a living but heres my suggestion. 2 sprayable gallons. Most basecoats mix 1 :1. Some mix 2:1. I did a car for a guy and he didnt understand why we ran out of paint when he spent 450 for a gallon of lesonal that mixes 2:1. ..

Wouldn't cheap out on metallic colors. Ask me how i know...if doing the whole job. Jams underside hood trunk. I would expect to spend 1500 on materials. This includes epoxy. 2k. Maybe some poly. Sand papers. Tape reducers laquer to clean guns. Basecoat and clear. Buffing compounds etc. On my 64 i spent 1800 on materials. On my 61 about 2000 because i went with a better quality base coat.....the most important advice i can give is that the chemistry of the materials will let you know right away that its incharge. You cant rush the process. And theres alot lf labor involved in chasing a show car finish.

I’m on my second spray of 2k. Shot super build before it. Going to finish it to 400 until I figure out what basecoat I’m using then follow it. I appreciate the help. I’ve only shot 1 other vehicle and I want this one better. I made the mistake of using single stage heavy metallic on the first go around because it was cheap,so it was headaches galore.

I Kinda figured price of product meant quality to some degree but also being so new to painting some of it had to be my inexperience as well.

Super build is good. I prefer that over slick sand

SPI base coat is amazing! I covered my truck with SPI orange with 2 coats. 1 almost did it, but the second coat was for peace of mind.
