Off Topic Coyotes

Trying to be the best me, I can be
I know this is off topic but i figured many of you will have some advice for me. I'm not a hunter/outdoorsman so I don't belong to any of those forums where I could ask this.

There are a lot of Coyotes around here in my area (Southside VA)now. Never use to be any here but they are here now, They are on my property. Didn't realize this until a couple of days ago. My little dog who thinks she's 10 feet tall and bulletproof had gone off chasing/stalking something in the bottom below my house. Fresh snow so she was running all around. It was getting dark so I was getting worried. I walked down there calling her. Was shining my flashlight and saw a set of eyes near the edge of the field. Thought it was her so I kept calling. As I got closer I noticed four other sets of eyes and I realized that they were coyotes. Big ones too.

Yelled at them and tried to scare them off. Thought the worst that maybe they had gotten her. Turned out she was ok and farther up closer to my house. Thanked the Lord about that as you guys know how much I love my dogs.

So my question is what can I do about them? Talked to one neighbor who said you really can't do much. I think I know where their den is (on the edge of my property) how can I get at least this pack out of my area? Pick them off one at a time? Any other solution? I hate the idea of killing them but I hate the idea of one of them killing my little dog more. The den is a good ways from my home. Probably a 1/4 mile or so. So it's not like they are right in my backyard but they are close. And those suckers are pretty good size. I've got a Sig Sauer AR-15 so that would probably get the job done if I have to kill them. Little leery of venturing down to where their den is though.

Thoughts?

I’d say if they were hungry enough and you were walking your property alone, a pack of wolves may see a person as a meal. Whether by DNR relocation of other means necessary, I would think you’d be better off with them gone.

Here in Texas we have a lot of coyotes. It would be impossible to eradicate them since they are prolific breeders. We keep our dogs indoors from dusk through dawn when coyotes are most active. We don’t let them stray much beyond the area around our house. Still not a guarantee but risk is greatly reduced.

dead on site here . everybody kills coyotes . they are useless predators who kill fresh born calves and many times the moma while she's down . most ranch/farm kids go spot lighting to get them at night . good way to make extra money.
we also have a problem with turkey buzzards killing livestock in the same way. they dont last long either .

I live in a dense residential area in South Jacksonville, FL with several preserves interspersed. Our coyotes are becoming more and more daytime critters. The best option we have is short supervised stints of outdoor time for our unethical little dog. And yeah, we also had a Florida Panther in the backyard one night.

Here in the Northeast they are all around us too. They killed my friends little dog a few years ago, at the edge of his property. They are bold and brazin, and opportunistic predators. My other friends solution after killing one after another, and they just keep reproducing, was to get a big Kangal breed dog. 125lbs coyote killing machine..

Have em here in Illinois too - watch your dogs closely - they’re cunning ! They’ll lure your small dog away and have the pack kill it . Happened to a friend of mine . One pretended to want to play with his dog - the guy thought it was cute - pup got lured farther away and the pack attacked the pup ! I hate em !!

We have alway needed to be careful with our dog and not let her get loose, she looks like a wolf/ coyote. I can imagine if a farmer or hunter saw her trespassing, she’d be down in a heartbeat. She loves people and is not shy or timid, just runs right to strangers. We always walk her on leash and put an orange cape on her, in case she every got loose.

I have Coyotes all around me here in WV, I have put several in the grave in my yard while they came in to eat my dogs food out of the pan. I shoot them with a 22 magnum with great results, You will not rid them in your area but you can have a detrimental affect on the pack. You can check around the sporting goods stores to ask if anybody traps in your area and get them to help out with the problem. Coyotes will eat anything including cats, dogs. My friend was in a tree stand bow hunting last year and was surrounded by a pack of 6 coyotes, He had to wait till they left to get out of the tree and now carries a pistol with him for protection. Good luck with the coyotes.

We live in southeast Missouri and raise goats on our farm, along with an assortment of poultry. these are all favorite entrees on a coyote's menu. We have kept several different breeds of livestock guard dogs over the years, including the ones mentioned, also Estrela Mountain Dogs, Great Pyrenees, Commodores, Kuvas and several others including crosses and mixed breeds. We have done a lot rescues of livestock guard dogs over the years. I would suggest finding yourself one and adding it to your pack. They live to protect whatever they are brought up with.

Also the AR would be faster and eat way less dog food!

Arizona is full of them. They will lure your small dogs away in order to kill and eat them, happens all the time here.
It is legal to shoot them if you are living in the country but not in town or certain subdivisions. AR does a nice job and isn't excessively loud. I usually leave the dead coyote to rot and be a warning to the others.

I had a border collie with me and saw a coyote taking off with one of my chickens in its mouth. Simply said, "get him" and the border collie took off like a bullet. She hit that coyote in the side and rolled him over. He dropped the chicken and then ran straight through a small wire box in my field fence. Fur went flying but he was gone.

Truthfully I was shocked at how the dog responded as I had rescued her and she seemed so meek and quite.
Now I have two German Shepherds and a Border Collie. The collie sounds the alert and the deep barks of the shepherds scare the coyotes and any other intruders away.
