old fart wisdom

Either one. It’s a personal choice and how confident you are. If I panel paint metallics I line them up in the booth the way they are installed on the car and paint them continuously as if they were on the car. Hope this makes sense.

Hopefully one of the pros will reply. I’m a little out of my lane replying in this thread. :)

Don

It makes perfect sense to me. It might make better sense for me to reassemble the car and then paint it.

I want to thank you Don and all of the other guys for answering my questions that I know are basic.

I went ahead and bought the Motobase. It along with my SPI primers, reducers and activators came in yesterday. I need to order my clearcoat and activator for it. I'm trying to beat the price increases that I know are coming.

It seams like luck sometimes I did a large Olds yeas ago in gold mist base coat all apart at different times and looked good when nput togher. But like most say if apart try to lay out the parts like on car and spray at same time at lease the base coat

By this are you saying to paint the car assembled or not to paint the panels at different times?
If you are a Novice you most certainly do not want to panel paint a metallic. Do the jambs and underhood and trunk, then do a temporary assemble masking off all the already painted areas. Paint it together. That color would be tough to panel paint for even the most experienced guy.

Why would the assembly be temporary? Do I need to take it back apart to clear? Cut & buff? Would I clear the jambs, under hood and trunk before the base or take it apart and clear everything then?

I said temp because it is often easier to temporarily install then take apart to assemble trim etc. Or to cut and buff. Not set in stone do what works for you.
You would want to do the jambs and underhood in both base and clear. Tape off and assemble. One reason why I said temporarily assemble. Pull the parts when finished to remove the masking. That way you get no overspray on the jambs or inside the fenders etc Again not set in stone just one way to do it.
