Old Guns

I took some autobody classes 15 years ago, but had to move on. I would like to get back to painting some new projects.

I have a Sata RP 1.4, Sata Minijet 1.0SR, and a Sata KLC 1.7, all in great condition. I understand that these guns are probably not the best for the current basecoats.

Looking to get either a new $280 nozzle set (1.2 RP, 1.3 RP) for the Sata RP, or a Devilbss GTi or Tekna Basecoat ($400, $500).

I'll probably use mostly SPI products except for Basecoat, which will either be PPG or Cromax.

What recommendations can you make for shooting Basecoat?

Is the RP a 2000 or is it the previous model? If it is a 2000 RP then you can shoot most basecoats just fine with a 1.3 nozzle/needle set. If it is an original RP then I'm not as certain as I never shot with one of those. Solid colors should be fine with what you have now (1.4) metallics and pearls would do better with the 1.3.

My bad, always thought there was model before that one. Guess I called it a 2000 RP when it was actually just RP, That gun should spray most basecoats just fine with a 1.3. Solids would be ok with the 1.4 It will use more paint most but it is still an excellent gun.

The RP is the blue handled one. I think the next version was the 2000 RP, and judging by part numbers they both use the same nozzle sets. So I could save a little bit by getting a 1.2 or 1.3 nozzle, but would a new gun be better?

Thanks for everyone's input. I'm still planning to use the RP 1.4 for clear, but what about shooting base coat? Would it be better to get a 1.2 or 1.3 nozzle set for base?

Basecoat like I said above use a 1.3 if you can still get one. If you are planning on shooting a solid color then the 1.4 will work fine. 1.3 would be better with a metallic.

I know some guys may have a different opinion! But... I've been using a rp 1.4 for universal clear for the past 5 or 6 years and prefer it over my 4000rp!
Agree with you. I used mine for years much better than either the 3000 or 4000. Only until I tried the 5000 did I switch. It is still a great clear gun.

What's your opinion on the difference between the 5000 and the 4000? I have heard alot of mixed feelings!
