Paint Failure Evaluation

I just got this truck in for an estimate. Its a 2002 Ford F250 Crew Cab and the paint is cracking and then chipping away.
Here is a close up of a chipped area:

Looks like it never adhered properly to the primer coat.
Here's a couple of more pictures:

Any ideas as to why this would happen? The truck appears to be in good shape overall.
Thanks,
Jim

Is it all oem paint or has it been repainted, either way it's interesting the cracks go down to grey primer in some spots and green e-coat in anther. Looks fairly thick also.

Bob, I don't know for sure on the repaint as that was my first thought also but I doubt it. It seems to be OEM and either way it is releasing from the primer and e-coat as you point out.
Another pic of the hood where you can see all the little slits in the paint:

Here one of the roof where the base/clear is completely gone in this channel:

It looks to me like a piss poor repaint.

OEM paint film is about 3.7 to 5.5 mils thick.

looks like 15-20 mils in the photo to my eye.

OEM paint thickness can definitely fluctuate. I've seen FORD paint jobs that were run through 5 times, yes, 4 repaints at the factory before it was delivered!!! Once you start sanding on this you'll be able to see if this was the cause as there will be color and clear rings to count.

No matter what caused it,you already know you will be taking it all off.

What sort of time line have you figured out?

Bob - I was under the impression that the e-coat was the primer on a factory paint job, is that accurate or did they prime over the ecoat at the factory? I have only sanded the oem paint off a total of 4 modern Fords and I never saw a primer, just ecoat, color, and clear.

I know with Ford they build them different at different locations, time of the year, moon cycles, and a few other secret recipe modifiers.LOL.

Wow, I measured the thickness of a paint chip and its 20 mils (.020"). Good eye SOF you called it right on.

I am hoping I'll be able to use a razor blade on this one. Thinking it will take me about 20 hours to strip it?

Sand an area down and count the rings of paint, I bet it was a repaint repaint repaint at the factory.

Maybe Ford should waranty it...LOL I've seen that 4-5 factory repaint thing on some G.M. vehicles as well but it's a lot more common on the Fords for some reason. I count five rings there.

Well five would put us about 20 mils thick if the average is around 4 mils.
Most of the paint came right off clean to the primer with only a couple of areas where the primer was adhered to the paint.

I worked at a GM dealer. you would be surprised at the amount of cars that are damaged and fixed prior to the car hitting the dealership. In Wisconsin we have full disclosure so GM would send these cars to Minnesota first for repairs, and we would have to dealer trade to get them here without having to disclose a thing. If a car was damaged during a test drive we sold the car to a family member and took the car back and sold it as used for the same reason. Now with carfax the only way it can happen is for the big boys to fix it before it hits the dealer lot. And unfortunately it happens daily....

Stripped the truck with a razor and heat gun. I may try this on next project as well since it worked great.

Lost my shirt on this one. Especially having to repair the fenders after the adhesive melt down. :(

Wow, very nice. Is this a side business for you or do you do it professionally?

Just a side thing that evolved from my 68 Coronet R/T restoration. People see that and then want me to paint their vehicles. I don't advertise and apparently I don't charge enough either. LOL

Actually Paulden which is North of Prescott on highway 89.
I see you are in the Tucson area about 210 miles South of me.
We are just under 5000' elevation so the weather is much more tolerable than say Phoenix.

Ah yes, just north of Chino Valley right? Any good "old school" wrecking yards up that way?
