Painting over time

Hi all,
As I paint my car in the garage, weather and life probably don't allow me to paint every part at the same time. If I was to paint my hood, decklid and smaller parts this year and stash them in my basement waiting for spring to paint the overall, am I asking for problems with everything matching? (Working from the same gallon of paint)

A lot of factors play in to this, solid color and spray set up ,temp's......... I did a red 57 Olds over a year time and no problem at all. Some times on a collision job with a pearl in it will not match no mater how I spray. Not the ideal way but try to record everything you do, mix, reducer, temps,# of coats........and of course SPI reducer and SPI clear LOL.

Todd, you don't say what color you are painting nor whether it is a solid color or metallic. If you are painting a metallic color you are getting into a risky area.

The metallic particles will settle and effect the final appearance. Even if you are using the exact same paint and shoot it at different times the colors can look totally different. They can be effected by temp, humidity, spray pressure, and even air movement. This is caused by the different drying times as a result of the circumstances and the particles settling differently. This causes the light to be reflected differently, as well as the fact they can settle deeper into the translucent color.

The good news is modern base coats are designed to be sprayed in light/medium coats and not designed to be hosed on. If you are going to paint it over a period of months it will be best if you don't try to shoot it glossy.

If you are using a solid color, your chances of success are much improved. Just make sure you have total coverage. If you don't your sealer will show through and again effect your final color.

Thanks John. Its a metallic. Lime gold motobase LV. The metallic is very fine. My gut feel was that it would matter which is why I posed the question. I was hoping that everyone would tell me it would be just fine lol
