Palm sander

Lizer

Mad Scientist
I'm thinking about getting this 3M palm sander because I've heard good things for it and it has a whopping 5/16" orbit (I'd be using it for stripping).

I'll pony up the $200 if it will work well for me. My question: is this overkill for me, and is there something less expensive I should be looking at that will work just as well for me? I want something that will take paint off quickly, short of blasting. I haven't seen other sanders with this large of an orbit.

I have a farm store DA like what Jim showed but it's absolutely worthless. It's not an IR though so maybe the cheap $40 ones are just that. I do have a 6" rotary buffer so maybe I'll try that. Why PSA and not hookit? I'm all about going completely ape chit when I'm stripping.

3M part # is 5568 for those interested. They are expensive but will last a long time if they aren't abused.

Most (all?) 8" inch discs like we are talking about are PSA. Hookit may work but it also may melt when used with a rotary. Rotary type work generates a lot more heat than orbital.

Same pad I use, and they last a long time, unless you have my helper. Then the pad starts losing big chunks off the edges almost immediately. The PSA discs work fine. Your not going to save any paper stripping paint, anyway. It gets used until it's dead.

I use the buffer too - have the pad on it for the sticky sand paper - strips a car quick ! Especially if you use 36 grit - then DA it with 80 grit- it will wreck havoc on chrome so be careful

Texas, your helper and my former co-worker must be cousins....:p He's doing it all now at the Shop I recently left. Feel sorry for the customers.

I use my buffer all the time for stripping, Velcro has never been a problem.
I use 5" and 6" discs. 40 to 80 grit.
Keep it moving, you don't want a lot of heat, heat will just gum it up and slow the process.
It will make a lot of dust very fast so do it outside with a respirator on.

I use 8 inch on a buffer too and yes the dust is horrific so I do it outside as jcclark suggested, Get the 8 inch pad and you will be well satisfied.

Coming back to this, what sand paper are you guys using? I was using some cheapo stuff off Amazon and it lasts about 30 seconds and is dead. Last time I"ll ever try that experiment. I decided to buy it safe and bought some 3M PSA 80 grit, it's their economy line and came to about $.38/disc so will see how it goes.

Here's my version of a "Shine"ism. Cheap paper always costs more than premium paper. 3M's economy line is garbage. Second what Texas said about Sunmight. It's high quality stuff priced less than 3M.

I agree. Sunmight green or gold is all good. Green is in a plaatic disc, gold is typical paper. Abrasive is the same . If you cant find sunmight, i was impressed with the 3m blue line. Priced under the purple and somewhat close to what the sunmight is.

Reminds me of something I heard the other day. "The most expensive car you will ever buy is a cheap Land Rover":)

LOL, A friend once told me he would rather pay alimony and child support than own a worn out Cadillac.

Anybody want to buy a 2004 Jaguar S type? :)

John
