Panel Prep Questions

Hey friends, I've been moving along slowly on my project, never-the-less, making progress. Have a few simple questions that I'd like your advise on in regards to panel prep. I removed the lead from the sail panels on my 69 fastback, cleaned up the underlying rust. and epoxied the area. I made a filler panel for it and epoxied the underneath of it and then welded the panel in. There is a void between the panel and body, so I poured epoxy in the void and pushed it through with air, hoping to give some coverage to the underlying area that was affected by the welding process. I then sprayed the area again with epoxy and put filler in the void and sanded flush. I'll epoxy the whole thing again after I'm happy with my filler work. See photos.

Questions..... Please keep in mind, I'm a total rookie and I fear a simple screw up that could ruin an expensive paint job.
  1. As I was sanding, I was using my bare hand to eval the flushness of the panel and filler. Got to thinking that I was leaving oil on the panel and should probably be wearing gloves of some sort. Agree? Gloves or no gloves?
  2. Should I use wax and grease remover over the areas that I have touched? I ask this because I have read about problems when using it on filler.
  3. Lastly, I have a can of SPI Wax and grease remover that is more than five years old. Is it still good?

Gloves are a good idea, just clean the area before applying other products. I don't know of anything in any cleaners that would go bad, as long as it's well sealed.

Nice project, looks good.

No need for gloves while you are working. Only until the final W&G remover step then painting. Just use W&G before any application of primer etc. You should always use W&G remover before any priming, painting or other applications of product. I do wear gloves when applying W&G remover before a step like priming or re-priming. So to be clear, wear them when applying W&G remover at any stage. Don't worry about wearing them while sanding, doing metalwork etc.

Roof looks good BTW.

Thanks fellas!

So to be clear, no problem with wax and grease remover over filler? I repeat this question, as I read somewhere about people having issues, blaming the W&G removal over filler for their problems after primer. I know the filler is porous. Perhaps they didn't give it time to evaporate before priming over???

And finally, what am I missing in Dean's post regarding my block?

If you do, ideally solvent based over filler. If you use waterbased like SPI 700 then give it plenty of time to evaporate. You can help it along with compressed air.

Dean makes his own line of sanding blocks.:) There is a thread about them on the forum here.

I keep W&G off filler. It doesn’t pass the risk reward analysis. The risk exceeds the reward imho….

What is the risk Don? I dont like to spray it on filler. I'll spray it on a wipe, damp, and then wipe the filler areas and immediately blow it dry. Just something about moisture on filler doesn't sit well with me, but I dont even know why....

I’ve had a couple of issues with 700. If I need to clean something I’ll use Sprayway.

I've never had issues using a solvent based W&G remover like SPI 710 or PPG DX330. Nor for that matter SPI 700. Just need to give it time to evaporate. All that being said I don't always use a W&G remover on filler, just if I think it's necessary due to any possible contamination. Filler isn't as critical in terms of cleanliness unlike paint and even primers.
One stage where I do is re-epoxying after doing filler work over epoxy. I use 700 and have never had an issue. Let it evaporate and give it time before re-coating with filler or primer.

Curious when you last bought 700.

My current batch has the new packaging label. I bought 3 gallons last time I ordered it. Used it on the latest car I've worked on . After filler (over epoxy) before reapplying epoxy. No issues. Gave it plenty of time (45minutes-1 hour) before applying epoxy. Done it that way with multiple cars in the past.

You didn’t answer the question. :)

I tried to.:) I can't remember the date. Early this year????. I bought 3 gallons so I haven't ordered any recently.

Why is that important? Do you suspect a formula change of some sort?

I guess I'll have to look into Dean's sanding blocks, then.

Interesting thread on W&G remover on filler.

Here is the thread.

I will wipe WGR over filler as well, mainly to remove dust. I’ve never had an issue doing so. Just give it plenty of time to flash off.

I've never sprayed W&G remover directly on filler but will wipe across it with a wet towel. Just to get any dust that air may have missed. Then allow 45 minutes or so for evaporation.
