Pillar Question

Hope im asking this in the correct catagory. i've replaced the roof skin on my 69 Mercury Cougar and need to fill the seams on the pillars. Do i use lead as in the old days or will plastic body filler work? i've had 1 person mention duraglass. I personally think Plastic body filler (bondo) will work. what do you guys use?

thanks

Well.... that depends. There are a lot of opinions on this topic. Here is my opinion.

You could use lead, if you know what you are doing and want to, but it's not necessary. There is always the possibility of warpage from the torch. Consider the hazards of working with lead. There is also a chance of corrosion problems later.

You can use duraglass if you want to, but unless it will take a lot of filler, like over 1/8" or so thick, regular filler will do just fine. Do what you can to keep the filler to a minimum, and you should be just fine.

about 1/8" or just a little more would do it. I've actually seen it thicker on racecars and stay in its place. so i think i will go that route.

Make sure the seam is welded completely closed before any lead or filler is applied.
