PPG Concept vs. “Essential”

Automotive Art (Motobase) has a SS, Motocryl. I don't know about Wanda.
I called Chad in Michigan a while back about an Automotive Art single stage and he told me to do single stage I needed to combine a converter to Motobase as follows.
2 parts Motobase 8LV-2K Converter
1-Part MotoBase 8LV Basecoat
1-Part Hardener (SPI clear coat activator will work)
10% Reducer

No mention of a standalone single-stage product. I did see Motocryl on his site today. They have two versions of it. One for export only another one that is VOC compliant. Possibly Motocryl line was not available at that time. Has anyone on this site used Motocryl and or is familiar with the product comment on their experience?

Over the last 10 or so years, I have painted 4 Ford tractors the same shade of blue. The first one is Concept, the next two are Motobase, and the most recent one is Wanda. I'm very happy with all of them. I don't think you can go wrong in your options.

My two cents worth!
I tell people all the time it is not how anything sprays as the crapier the paint is, the easier it sprays due to low solids, but it's how it looks 5, 10, or 20 years from now is all that counts.

Try to make an ebay 75-dollar clear coat, run, solvent pop, or orange peel; impossible!
Make sure you move in a year so the customer can't find you!
There is no free lunch!

When getting advice from a major paint jobber, if you are not a regular customer, they will automatically steer you to the crap line, so they dont need to listen to you complain about the price.
Oh!! It is the same as the high-dollar stuff, just cheaper because of a different label.
BS.

I want to do my Falcon project in single stage as well. PPG Concept has always been the first choice a respected friend. Recently he went to base coat clear and used all SPI products. I am not sure what base he used.

Anyhow do you think you could ballpark what a gallon of concept would be in a white solid OEM color, quite close to SPI SS white. I would prefer if it was an OEM color for resale purposes. I have spent way too much money on this car so cost is becoming a concern. If the PPG is crazy expensive I will likely just stick with SPI pure white SS because I know it is high quality and reasonably priced.

Also I thought some members have reported that PPG Concept has been discontinued or unavailable to them.
I was quoted $1,109.00 for a gal of Concept, along with a gal of Reducer and a 2 quart of Activator Which what was the required mix if I wrote it down correctly. The Essential came in 1 gallon kits at $220, but that was a total mixed gallon. much much cheaper.
I didn’t have a problem with the cost but he was still steering me toward the Essential… which is why I posted my question here. Didn’t see the sense in spending that much more if there wasn’t a big difference in quality and results.

Good to know. Thanks

Great info. Thanks for the input. I didn’t complain about the price and that’s why I thought it was odd he was recommending the cheap stuff.
I wish I had tackled this project back when you were still producing the blue.

I would also check out Metalux single stage. It's a high quality product. You can find Metalux at Axalta distributors. Priced more reasonable than Concept.

I wonder if his profit margin is higher on the lower quality line...

I mail order a lot of stuff but things like this I prefer to buy local. However, if he’s giving me bad advice it sort of defeats the purpose… Not like it’s really close anyway. Don’t seem to be any local pain shops nearby me with the exception of Barry/SPI.

I know nothing about mixing paint, is it possible to use spi white ss as the "base" for jobber to put toners in & shake if color match doesn't have to be exact? Experiment with pints if so?

ill throw another one out there. look into utech. thats akzo's single stage line. its so much cheaper than ppg, covers great, super durable and will last years. there are 2 different ones. the 500 which is what i use and 350. they are basically the same except the voc content. the u500 sprays a little thinner and the 350 has more body to it and flows a little more so it will give you a glassier finish but if your cutting and buffing then it doesnt matter. i spray u500 almost every day. price depends on color. i am spraying a cheap formula but its only $175 a gallon. like anything, reds, etc will be quite a bit more.

white generally isnt used as a base for paint mixing unless you are mixing a very light or off white color. the base on most colors starts out clear.

I have sprayed the u350 ss on a car still here at my shop. It sprayed very well. It's a metallic green available on the early 70s gm but with a little pearl mixed in . It looked nice
