Presta

This trunk lid has 7 coats of Universal on it with 30 min between coats. I put that much on because I wanted to be able to flatten out over the stripes. I only used trizact 1500, 3000 and 5000. Then the 3M Perfect It EX system using a Flex. No blocking nor wool. I will say its my experience that using wool after trizact will help flatten and speed up the process but with black I didn't want to risk the swirls. Also the Universal was 6 months old. I wait on the dieback which always happens eventually IMO even if its just a light fog weeks after painting.

Nice! So with that many coats you started with 1500? Ao no blocking, not 1000 or 1200 to flatten, denib, etc.? Just soft pads all the way?
Also straight from 1500 to 3000 right?
Seems like most newer cutting compound says foam pads work. I guess just not as fast.
I'll be 4-6 weeks before starting.
Thanks!

I denibbed with a fess tool and went straight to 1500 trizact. If you have any urethane wave you will have to block first. yes 1500 to 3000. I used foam pads only with a flex. softer pads as you go. If you don't have a flex other methods may be better. I also had unlimited time because its my car. I probably had 7 hours in the trunk lid. I usually use wool after the trizact 3000 but with Black I do this.

Wool works faster for compound. Foam for polish though, always. I typically always start with 1000 then 1500 then 3000 then if i want i will goto 8000 but i dont use that all the time. Depends on the job. You can start at 1500 with finishing film and that will cut out dust nibs and some orange peel but it wont cut out any urethane wave

Beware of the trizact in that it will leave pigtails if you get any dirt at all under the pad. You have to be extremely clean with that system. Especially the 1500 pads.

I was actually looking to sand by hand, for the experience being its my first paint job. It's a small car, Karmann Ghia, with lots of curves.
I'm thinking of using Meguiars unigrit as it goes to 3000 grit. Any pros/cons of this paper over say 3m or Eagle, etc.? Or other words of advice? Im thinking 1200 (have a few runs), 1500, 3000.
I'm going to give the 3d 500, 520 a try with wool and black pad per above.
Thanks!

Depending on how much clear I put on one, I'll start with 600- 800 grit to remove any urethane wave then go 1000-1500-2000 by hand. Once you do 2000 there really isn't any need to go any further by hand. I then follow it up with 3000 Trizact and 5000(old) or 8000 (new) Trizact. on a 6" RO/DA sander.

Meguiars paper is not really anything special. Just marketed to the DIY crowd. IIRC it's made by 3M. Eagle, 3M both are good paper and used by the majority of Pros out there. Do some searching of posts by JimC and Texasking as there are several threads where they go into a lot of detail as to procedures that work well.
