Primer with 1.8 tip?

I have a car in bare metal, ready to start this stage of the build. I want to use spi epoxy to prime it and I bought an iwata lph440 primer gun with a 1.8 tip. I just read the info on primer and saw it calls for a 1.4-1.5, smh. I know I need a 1.4 or so for my color and clear anyway. I do have a brand new sharpe razor with a 1.4 that I’ve had sitting around for years, don’t know if it’s still good it needs seals or anything. I might buy an lph400 anyway. Can I use the 440? Or should I just sell it since it’s brand new still and get the 400? Thanks in advance! This site is great for all the help and knowledge I’ve found so far.

You can adjust the fluid in on your 440 and spray epoxy no problem. Plus when/if you use 2k urethane primer you'll need a 1.8 tip.

Try this. Adjust your fluid needle all the way in. Meaning to the right until it is closed. Then open it 1 1/2-2 turns out (to the left). Ideally you'd want to mix up a little epoxy, but if not you can use reducer, and test your pattern. Adjust it till its wet enough. Probably won't take more than 1 1/2 to 2 turns out, but test and see. For priming that you are going to sand, you'll be ok using a 1.8. Just adjust your fluid to give you the desired pattern. If it's too wet turn your fluid in (right), if it's too dry turn it out (left).

I don't know how clear my description comes across, so if you have questions keep asking them.:)

PS, I use a cheapo Iwata Gunsa 1.8 lots of times to spray SPI epoxy. Works fine once you get the fluid adjusted right.

Crystal clear, thanks for the info! I’ll still be in the market for a lph400 for the later stages but I’ll run the 440 to set the foundation
