Questions about bedliner.

I epoxied the trunk in my '55 Bel Air today and am going to shoot bedliner in it tomorrow.
I've never used any kind of bedliner before.

I've got some welding seams that aren't finished off perfectly smooth and do show after 2 coats of SPI epoxy which I knew would.

Do I need to finish the seams with a little polyester glaze before shooting the bedliner or will the bedliner pretty much hide this kind of thing?
I bought the bedliner for purposely hiding the imperfections in the trunk but don't know how much it does that.

I bought 2 gallons of bedliner for use on the trunk and some other things and was thinking 1 gallon would be enough for the trunk. But, I could use some of the second gallon in there if necessary.

Also, I am planning to apply 3M 08300 1K seam sealer around the trunk floor edge seams before shooting the bedliner tomorrow. Does this sound OK to do?

Btw, the hole in the trunk is for the electric fuel pump access. It sticks thru the hole a little. I fabricated a raised cover for it. Don't have to pull the tank to replace the pump if I ever have trouble with it.

I wouldn't use the solvent based ultrapro. The urethane version is the way to go: http://3mcollision.com/products/sealants/3m-urethane-seam-sealer-08361-gray.html

One gallon kit will be more than enough for the trunk area. Are you going after a smooth look or textured? A textured surface will help hide the seams. You can shoot the bedliner right over the urethane ultrapro just give it a few hours-overnight. I would wait untill the outside of the car is in final primer before coating the trunk-less chance of any overspray issues during the rest of the build.

Thanks Bob.

Yes, I'm going to try to get some texture with it. I'll just shoot it and see how it goes. My interior guy is going to carpet the trunk so I shouldn't be so much of a perfectionist on it anyway.

Follow up.

I sprayed the bedliner in the trunk a few minutes ago.
Oh yeah, it will cover pretty much any imperfection short of a dent!

I quickly realized that you spray it like a drywall texture gun. Cool!
I didn't know what to expect.

I was able to coat it with just a quart which is all I mixed up to start with.

I think I'll mix up another quart and finish it off. I just need to even out the texture a little bit.

I didn't use the tint since I'm going to paint over it.
Kind of looks like a bunch of people with a nasty cold just spit in the trunk right now!

Barry, is it ok to not use tint in the mix? I thought it was an integral part of the mix.

I asked him when I bought it. He advised me not to put the tint in it.
Since I want it white, I couldn't tint it that color so I will paint it. Better to have it the milky yellow instead of black for painting white over it.

I tell you. This is great stuff!
I went ahead and sprayed the whole gallon in 3 coats. I figured it would give me a little more sound deadening. I didn't want to store just a partial portion of the gallon kit anyway. I've got another gallon for some other stuff. I guess I should have used white primer underneath instead of the gray but I didn't have any. I just ordered some but I didn't want to wait to get this job done.

I was surprised how easy the bed liner is to use. James gave me a few pointers, and I was good to go.

The trunk looks great.

Put on the base and universal clear today.

I love it!

Btw, the color is '55 India Ivory. Not sure the picture really shows the color accurately. My car is going to be 2 tone. India Ivory over Regal Turquoise.

The finish looks a little rough. Are you going to colorsand? LOL! It looks real good. Are you still going to carpet or leave it as is?

Thanks!
Yes, my interior guy is going to carpet just the floor part. Since I have a raised cover (about 3/4") for the fuel pump access, I'm going to have him put something on the floor first to level it out. He mentioned doing it with wood.
Btw, I posted all these pictures just a while ago over on the TriFive forum in their Body&Paint section. I put in a plug for SPI of course. I've got a lot of compliments already.

Roger1,

Nice job.

Does the liner only come in clear or can we buy it tinted with black? I am thinking of spraying the under side of my fenders with it?

Thanks.
It comes with a tube of black tint. I chose not to use it.
It can be tinted other colors (except white) but you would have to get tint from a paint shop.
Did you see where Jeremy posted his Camaro pictures? Bedliner really looks nice as an undercoating:

Roder1,

Thanks for the reply. It sure does look nice black.

Do you think it will cover sanded blasted rust pits?

I sure don't want to have to mud the underside if I don't have too.

Yes it will hide pits no question.
I agree the black looks terrific on that underbody. But, I wouldn't like black in a trunk. But that's just my opinion.

Thanks guys for the awesome feedback.

May not be original but my car is driver. I may put her an AACA show the next time they are local just for kicks and see how she places with the big restros

Great job, I really like how you topcoated with Ivory for a different look.

Wow that really looks nice. I bet it is great sound deadener too. I'd throw an old school rubber mat in there and let folks wonder how you did that.
Cool.
