Recommended over lap when spraying epoxy

What is the recommended over lap when spraying epoxy, 90%, 75%, 50%?

Asking to aid myself as well as other beginners since there has been many questions lately with spraying issues using epoxy, ie; craters etc.

Personally, I use 50% overlap for everything. It's easier for me to keep the tip of the spray gun centered on the edge of the previous pass.

Thanks for your personal method. Lately I've really been concentrating (looking for the edge of the fan pattern) whether top or bottom for consistent over lap. My best success has been with seeing the bottom edge of the fan pattern. I have some epoxy to spray today, I'm going to try your method.

I like that idea. I am on my 5th paint job and this sounds like a great way to be more consistent. All of my previous paint work has turned out nice in the end but I was very inconsistent and did many thing different each time. I have slowly started to learn the complete routine. I do have a question that i can’t seem to understand. When you do your first pass and drop the gun down 50% wouldn’t your top 50% of your 1st pass only have 1 pass of paint? That’s a very confusing question. I can’t seem to describe what’s in my mind any other way. I am close to getting ready to paint my first metallic and I know I need to be more precise.

You could center your first pass on the edge of the panel. :). Good question…. :)

As stated above, center the first pass on the edge of the panel. Often times the last pass will be centered on the edge as well.
You'll get the hang of it real quick.

On horizontal surfaces, like the hood, you will need to exercise care to keep the spray gun perpendicular to the surface. You want consistent coverage with fan. Tipping the gun will result in tiger stripes.

I center first pass off the panel. Also when I'm spraying an area like windshield posts. Instead of a long pass from up to down, I do passes side to side and work my way up, or down. That way you are utilizing the entire fan pattern instead of only the center. Kind of hard to explain.
