Can I reduce SPI epoxy with this?

I would contact Barry directly. I have used PPG and I think even HOK reducers with no issues, but he would be able to tell you for sure.

It says basecoat reducer right on it. If you wanted to use a Sherwin product, US3 would be the stuff to use. The US- series of reducer is actually okay stuff, just more expensive than SPI.

Edit: BTW, I have used US reducer in epoxy, although it was years ago. If it's the same stuff, it works fine.

Thank you. I don’t need to use Sherwin Williams. It’s just what I have. This is my first paint job, I don’t understand the differences between reducers. I’ve been using unreduced epoxy and sanding a little before SS but I wanted to give sealer coat a try. I have this as well. AC87D300-3D56-4057-9252-80350E6C2FC7.jpeg

SPI tech support replied and said I can use the sherwin williams reducer. Thanks all for the help. I'm starting to get the feeling Sherwin Williams is looked down upon in this forum.... The store is down the street from me and the people are helpful there so that is why I went with Sherwin Williams paint. I'm in California so kind of limited on what I can use. I've painted a few pieces with the Sherwin Williams SS and has come out real nice... so I'm hoping I didn't make a big mistake using their paint and products.....

People I know that have used S/W in the past have told me that it has its own peculiar ways. I've never used it so I don't know what those are. If it works fine for you then by all means use it. I grew up on ppg basf and Dupont paint so I know what it takes to make those work for me.

Its a weird industry. There are products that people will bash that others love and vice versa. If you are happy with the results you are getting, keep on doing what you're doing. Hell I have used the Finish1 acme clear a bunch and got awesome results with it. I like SPI for a few reasons, Price, performance and service. The prices at the stores in my area are flat out getting ridiculous. SPI is still the best IMO when it comes to that and the service you get.

Dont get me wrong, there is JUNK, but any of the major brands will be good to go for you.

Look at the reducer. Is it milky? All of SW basecoat reducers (that I know of) have a stabilizer in them. If it is not completely clear, do not use it. Big problems. As crash said, the US series is regular urethane reducer and would work fine.

Just make sure you use the exact type of S-W reducer that SPI tech support said was okay. Basecoat reducer is almost always not okay for anything but basecoat.

I used it for many years. All the majors have their good and bad points. Their 2K primer is very good. Some of the clears aren't bad, but the speed clear is junk. The Ultra 7000 base covers well, is easy to spray, but is not sandable. If you don't give it a lot of flash time, it will cause problems. The biggest problem with SW is the cost. They have gone insane and priced their products way above what they are worth, IMO.

I had no idea they made car paint until I heard it on this forum.
All the local SW stores only carry house paint.
Must be a regional thing.

4 years ago I had my house painted. Got 3 bids. All 3 contractors said they would only do it if we used SW paint.

All that said, it might surprise some of you that I still use a Sherwin product which I will not name, other than to say it ain't their basecoat. No paint company is all bad, but very few are all good.

Probably frowned upon here but I’ve sprayed a ton of Finish 1 fc710/720 clear in my day. Actually kinda like it. And it’s 10 min away if I’m in a pinch. Every company has its pros and cons.
