Regulator Question

I bought this set about 5-6 years ago. I only used it once. I know it's not very good. I am hoping it'll be okay to spray primer.

Anyway, the regulator that came with it only cuts the air down to about 40 psi. I can close it (at least it feels closed) and it reads about 40. Are these repairable, or can someone recommend a good one? I don't want to just buy something else that is junk. I have to order online. Not much around here.

Are you taking the reading with the trigger pulled? That is the correct reading. Even better with some fluid, like laquer thinner, flowing.

Good. Have you done a test spray?
Hard to believe they would ship a regulator that wasn't compatible.
Or it could be defective. Or they could be lame.
I'd do a quick spray. If it's good, it's good.
If not, @RenewAP suggestion is good.

It’s more than likely just a cheater valve. I would toss it and buy a true regulator as recommended above.

That's good advice.
The low end gun sort of implies potential budget constraints, so I offered a budget friendly path.

Another option is to fully open the gun regulator and then set the PSI at the gun using the wall regulator. Again with trigger pulled full open and fluid in the gun.

Thanks, all. I took RenewAP's advice. I found a new one on eBay for $23. Now I know I'll have a good one. I didn't want to buy just any one, not knowing if it would be any better.

Right now, I don't have anything to test spray with. I'm getting things together for a Spring time attack on my Duster prep project.
