Restoring faded plastic cladding and trim ?

I've searched the forum on this topic but didn't find much discussion. What is the better way to get the faded plastic cladding (like on SUV's over wheel arches, bumpers, side skirts, etc) looking more like it originally did?

I've tried the heat gun method and a couple of the aftermarket detailing type of products (some are using peanut butter - I think I'll pass on that one!). It improves the looks for a few weeks to few months but after some car washes and more sun they don't seem to really last; and in some cases you end up with more blotches in the end.

Are you spraying some type of color coat on the faded cladding or what have you found that is working best?

Years ago I had 3 land rovers and the plastic and trim pieces were junk, like normal I keep a company car 3 year as I do 40,000 to 60,000 a year.
At about a year and a half I would take a Heat gun and slowly heat each piece until it looked normal and when I sold the vehicle a year or so latter it still looked good.
Trick is heat the part slowly and don't over heat it.
