Rupes Orbital Buffer

My Paint jobber just stopped in and did a Rupes Orbital Buffing demo on a hood with fresh euro clear and I was impressed. 1500 da dry then 3000 da damp. Any one using this buffer? The kit is like $580. I am a Mikita wool then foam guy for cut and buff. He said this system is changing the way guys buff fresh paint???

I've been using an electrical orbital for clear for about 5 yrs now.
(that's the only way I do it now)
Same way, first I dry sand w/ 2000 then 3000 foam slightly wet, but the wet is just barely wet,
works better with very little water, almost dry, I just mist it with a spray bottle.

Thats all I use is the Rupes Big Foot buffers. Meguiars 105 with microfiber and you can 1 step polish to a perfect mirror.

Thanks guys. My paint jobber is having a open house/ trade show next week and the Rupes factory rep will be there and will get more info on the buffing kit.

I’ve been meaning to get into this topic for a while now. I was raised with a rotary. Bought my makita new out of school almost 20 years ago and she’s still going strong! I guess I’ve always been on the rotary since I’ve always been more on the auto body side of things. Seems the detailers tend to use more da and forced rotation polishers. I’ve been getting more and more into that end of it and also really perfecting even my collision cut and buffs. It seems the da’s are really taking over these days. I was kinda set on a flex forced rotation thinking it was the best of both worlds. Possibly even the newer cordless option. Does anyone find the fact it spins backwards weird or does it come pretty natural? That was my one issue lol. Otherwise it seems like people are happy with a quality 15mm or 21mm da. I assume one would have to cut and buff to a finer grit if compounding and polishing with da or flex? Thanks for the help!

So what makes this different than the other orbital buffers that are essentially a waste of time trying to buff color sanding? More aggressive orbit? What is the advantage over a Rotary? Can't be speed. Only advantage I can see would be safer in terms of burn through. Burning through has never been an issue for me, and I don't detail cars everyday so I can't see any advantages in one. (for me) Correct me if I wrong.:)

I think to a certain degree as you said safety. But certain combinations of the right tool, pad, and compound can still be quite aggressive. So I think they can be an advantage for the less skilled. I also think from what i see it’s easier to get a defect/swirl free finish. But if your a skilled rotary user that can also be possible. Unfortunately ive seen a lot of collision jobs, or dealer cars, with horrible rotary buff jobs with trails and swirls all over the place once the oils from the compound have worn away.

I have a FLEX.I don't think it works great on fresh clear unless you sand with really fine paper. I do like it for finishing. I always clean between steps with 710. It cleans the compound oils very well.

I use a Dewalt rotary. It's what I was taught, how I learned and what I'm comfortable with. It's probably antiquated technology but still works. Kind of heavy though

I can see where they would be handy for polishing/finishing. Maybe I’ll give it a try. Can always sell it if I don’t like it.

i dont even use a rotory anymore full rupes bigfoot system i start with 600 grit and work my way to 3000 grit best buffing machines out there no holograms swirls or burned edges

Got any pics? As I posted above I really skeptical (not as to what you said :)) as to how there is any advantage over a conventional rotary.
