Sata NR 2000 orange peel

Hey guys I’m having issues with a newly acquired sata nr200 gun. I was spraying base coat on a couple of Jeep doors and couldn’t get away from the orange peel. The gun has a 1.4 needle nozzle kit in it. Do I need to go with a lower number needle? Please help thanks Cliff

More information would help.
Do you have enough air supply for the gun? Which clear, any reducer, temperature of metal, distance from panel, overlap, etc.?

If you are getting orange peel in basecoat you are doing something seriously wrong. Sata NR2000 1.4 is an excellent gun to shoot base with. I used one for years doing collision repair. Like 68 said we need info to help. Brand of base, how you mixed it, gun setup, experience level, what sort of air setup do you have? Etc, etc.

Matin senior base 1to1 ratio air pressure setting I tried 30 psi and up. Beginner experience I purchased this gun thought it would be a good one I stopped in the middle of spraying the doors and switched to my cheap starting line gun with a 1.3 tip and now orange peel. After I finished with the clear I inspected the nozzle the starting line had a .047 orfice the sata had a .063 that’s why I’m questioning the tip size being to large.

Well over the years (17 or so) I used two NR2000 guns for base. A 1.3 and a 1.4. The 1.4 would spray almost anything the 1.3 would. I pretty much only used the 1.4 after a while cause it was slightly faster. Used it for everything from solids, metallic, pearls, and candies. Not just a few but several thousand cars. Multiple brands of base. So I know the gun will perform with any basecoat.
Is the peel in the clear or the base? Getting orange peeled base is really unusual, are you sure it's not in the clear?

Chris I was getting the orange peel with the base coat. Which is strange I could get a 15” spray pattern with that gun I like about a 8 or 9 inch fan

Sata NR2000 is rated at 15 cfm of air at 29 psi
Does your compressor put out this much CFM? If not you will struggle to get that gun to spray the way it is designed to.

What size compressor do you have? What is your air line layout? Like 68 stated, if you don't have the air volume then bad things will happen. What was your gun setting? Fluid knob 2 turns out from fully closed and fan open all the way is what I usually started with on that gun. Sometimes would open it up more but never more than 2 1/2 turns out.
What about overlap? Gun distance from the panel? Basecoat was Tec Base? Or another MS product? What reducer did you use? Did you use the MS reducers? If memory serves Tec Base uses a funky reducer. If you tried to substitute another reducer for it you would have issues. Give us specifics if you want us to be able to help. Picture of the problem would also help.

You know that is something I didn’t think of with the air line being 1/4” maybe I should be running a 3/8. I had the fluid knob out 2 turns and the fan 2 turns I tried several different variables I could achieve a spray fan of 15” but when I turn down the air pressure to 30 I was not getting a good fan spray. This has me really thinking about the volume with the 1/4” line?

Sorry I was using text base

I believe Tec base is the same as Sherwin Williams Ultra 7000. It does not lay down as smooth as some other bases, but there should not be visible orange peel. That 1/4" hose is not helping. Definitely need to step up to 3/8", preferably with high flow fittings. That should make a big difference. The Sata NR2000 is my favorite base gun for silvers and pearls. Mine has a 1.3, but as Chris suggested the 1.4 should be fine with the material turned in a little.

All I found my problem the air distributor behind the nozzle had 2 cracks in it causing the fan to sputter like a texture gun have a couple new ones on order.
