sata rp 3000

I picked up a couple of sata 3000 one rp and a hvlp. New to sata's they both have 1.3 tip. Sprayed my truck this past summer with spi single stage white. Could not get the paint to lay down with out peal. Played with pressure and adjustments to no avail with the rp. Would 1.4 be better for SS also spraying around 30 psi. Getting ready to spray single stage black on my mustang and I want to lay it down flat. Any suggestions.

I am not a pro so will defer to them if they disagree. Personally I have the best results when I spray SS like I do clear coat. In other words, I spray it wetter than I do base coat.

absolutely. ss is in fact just clear coat with pigment in it.

i spray all my clear with a 3000rp 1.4 tip. you can do it just fine with a 1.3. for the 3000 you dont want to run it full psi. i believe sata recommends about 36 for that gun. i have always found that to be way too much air. spi ss and clear needs to go on a bit heavier so it flows out. at full psi its atomizing so well that you are putting that coat on so thin. it may be a full coat but its not a thick enough coat to flow. i generally run mine around 29-30.

Sata HVLP's do not spray clear well, but they are excellent basecoat guns. Use the RP for clear and SS and follow Jim's advice.

spraying epoxy as a sealer I have both hvlp and rp. Is the hvlp better with epoxy?

Hvlp because it blows a little softer. I bought a 4000 hvlp in 1.5 and that sprays the epoxy better than any gun i have ever used.

Did a couple rounds of spraying with the RP. 1.3 2 1/2 turns. still get a ton of orange peal. Reduced a bit sprayed 3 coats on two doors and hood layed out almost peal free but got a little pop on doors and hood is a bit cloudy. 30 minuets between coats. The body is all I have left to do may be pulling out the old GTI, I hate sanding peal!

Tighten your overlap. Get it closer to 75%. Do this with the gun 1 1/2- 2 turns out instead of 2 1/2. Be consistent with your overlap. As you are spraying watch for the clear "filling in". Adjust your speed so that it fills in and no more. Make sure you are spraying in straight line passes.
