Hey guys I bought a Sata x5500 rp 1.3 I nozzle this week and tried it out today on paper, It only has a 4.5 inch fan wide open. The seller says he can get it fixed and send it back to me, Is there a way to fix a defective pattern?

Not that I know of, unless you change the whole nozzle, needle and air cap. Which with SATA comes as a 3 piece kit. Sorry to hear about your gun not working the way it should.

That was exactly what I thought, I thoroughly cleaned every passage and then shot again and the same results.

Was it a new gun?

What is the normal fan width of the x5500 I nozzle?

I’d say about 6” spraying distance you should have at the very least 7” to 8” size fan. I’ve been spraying closer and faster at around 5” and the fan I get looks like 6” and I’m using a 1.2 i which would have slightly less fluid output than your 1.3

I spray about 6 inches from the panel, Here is a picture of the pattern. I am not happy at all with 4-4.5" pattern .

That does look odd, not like the pattern I see on my gun. Which coating are you spraying in that pic?
Tomorrow I’ll try to spray something and take a pic on a piece of masking paper like you did.

JC you mention it was used. Have you completely disassembled it and cleaned everything? Needle, nozzle, air cap? Have you checked whether any of the openings on the nozzle were plugged? The are very small and if plugged it would restrict the fan pattern. Other ideas, may be silly but have you verified that the fan knob is fully open? Loosen the screw and re tighten. Close it completely re-open completely. Can you see any damage on the nozzle? Sometimes people will use the wires that come in gun cleaning kits to clear one of the atomizing holes and they damage them when they do.
Verify that you can see light through all the atomizing holes in the nozzle. Make sure the plastic piece that goes into the air cap is there. Look into the air cap and verify that there isn't old dried material in it. Make sure the air cap is tightened down completely.

Looking at the pic something is damaged if that is an "I" model. It looks like its spraying more like the "O". I is supposed to spray a almost perfectly even "I" shape. No bulge in the middle. Break it all down and visually inspect everything for damage. Something will make itself clear. Did you get it on Ebay? Can you return it?

I thoroughly cleaned every orifice and the needle last night and was sure hoping that the gun would spray better but it sprayed exactly as it did before, I did verify that the fan control knob was fully open as I would work it from 0 to fully open. The pattern never changed from 4.5 inches, I just verified that the fluid tip seal is in like new condition, The orifices in the fluid tip and air cap are very

clean and can see light through those that can be seen through. The seller told me he could get it refurbished for $60.00, I have never heard of a $60.00 Sata nozzle kit before?

is the air diffuser ring in place under the air cap? if that is missing then it would give you results like this. remove the air cap. there should be a black plastic ring inserted on the gun side under the fluid tip. will usually have a wavy pattern to it. if it is there you need to remove that ring and check for debris under the ring. its usually pressed in there pretty good and hard to get out without the tool. that is a pretty cheap part if its the issue.

JC is this that "Demo Star" gun? From this seller? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sata-Demo-Star-Jet-X-5500-Rp-/233368468320?hash=item3655d83b60:g:TUUAAOSw7bZdo4T2&nma=true&si=pEi4ub5xlXippnKfH%2FJyQ%2BDxCQU%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Those guns were used by Sales reps in demonstrations. SATA says they are not for re-sale. I wonder if the narrow fan pattern is built in because it is a demonstration gun. At this point if it was me, I would contact the seller and see if he will let you return it. No way should you trust him to get it rebuilt for $60. No way,no how. THe last needle nozzle set I got was for a 5000 RP and I got it for $173 on Ebay from the Italian seller of Sata's. From a jobber the needle nozzle set for your gun is gonna be minimum $250. If he doesn't let you return it then it's time to play hardball. If you paid with a Paypal account (I hope you did) you can open a case with them. Simply tell them the truth that what he sold you was defective and it was not represented that way. They (Paypal) side with the purchaser almost all the time. They will tell you to send it back to him and they will credit your Paypal account. If you paid for it with a Credit Card you can do much the same. Contact the CC company and tell them you were sold something defective and seller is unwilling to take it back. They will guide you from there. Good Luck. Hope it works out for you. In the future don't buy largeish purchases from sellers with so little feedback.

If it is what I think it is, they did away with that part on the 5500, there’s no plastic parts on the spray gun body.

I’m thinking that since Sata did not charge for that gun it is set up intentionally not to spray properly. They didn’t want someone to get a free gun.....

A demo gun is supposed to spray properly, how else would they convince painters it’s the latest and greatest?

I could see someone having multiple nozzle set ups and maybe mixing up parts by mistake from different guns. We’re obviously just speculating at this point.

SATA did send faulty spray guns to a YouTube reviewer, but the issues were the fan not spraying even, not the fan being only 4.5” at most.

I understand and thought the same thing but was also thinking maybe it was used for some kind of static display.
