sealer/base coat

I am going to do a candy on my car. Any problems with using HOK silver sealer for the sealer and base coat? 3 coats? I will then shoot some SPI innercoat with mini/micro chips flooded in it to increase the sparkle. I will then use SPI inner coat and HOK Kandy Koncentrate for the candy layers and finish with SPI Universal Clear to top it off.

I think Jim C. told me about using 1 1/2 oz. of KK to a quart of Innercoat.

Sound reasonable?

i would skip the intercoat clear and just use a uk kandy, all catalyzed 2k products. more stable film. thats what i would use.

Process sounds fine to me. The amount of kk can vary. Could be 1/2oz could be 2. The less the easier it will be to get a blotch free finish but the more coats you will need. Nothing wrong with using the uk type candy like sik said but i do prefer candies in basecoat form. I really havent used the urethane type in years. The spi intercoat is extremely strong and stable compared to other base binders i have used. With that product i would not worry. Every candy job i have done in the last 4 years has been with spi or diamont bc00. Basecoat candies tend to blotch easier than the uk types but uk you need to watch runs and wrinkling. Pos and neg to both.

The reason I want to use SPI intercoat is the hardness it delivers next to HOK UK.
What would be your suggestion for doing the jams and under the hood and trunk and engine bay? Just stick with the Kandy process?
Jim, I heard your gonna do my buddies car, guy is in Jersey...his name is Brady and he has a Fiat Spider.

Yeah when he has it ready im just gonna shoot it for him. He doesnt have the facility to do it especially this time of year. If your doing candy on the car then the jambs should match and be candy as well. The uk series is urethane so its basically a clearcoat with dye mixed in. Probably just as hard or harder than the spi intercoat. Its the sg100 that is soft and should not be used as a candy binder.

sorry as well as spi intercoat maybe. its not guna be more durable as a catalyzed 2k carrier(activating a 1k base is not a real 2k to me) i would rather see u use an spi clearcoat as a carrier and use kk in it.

what experience do u have shooting candy?? someone who doesnt know what there guna do for the hardest of hard of a custom paint job.. might not have the experience/skill to pull a full candy job. especially over silver. u might want to look into a hok kbc or maybe a kbc with a light coat or 2 of kandy. just throwing this out from experience.

I've got some work out there with quite a bit of intercoat on it and there hasn't been any durability problems-none. Just make sure you catalyze the intercoat and let it set overnight before puting the Universal over it. It needs time to purge the solvents and if you rush it there is more of a chance of solvent pop and chipping problems-it does make a big difference from what I've seen. JMO
