sealer over filler question

I'm using up some HOK kd3000 surfacer / sealer on some motorcycle side covers. I did two coats of surfacer then my filler work then the kd mixed as a sealer. It took four lite coats before the filler spots were covered. What should I have done different.

Another question, on another thread it is mentioned using SPI expoxy mixed 1:1:1. Is that correct? I'm a novice painter, but all the sealers Ive used have been in the 4-1-2 range. I seems wrong and expensive to use that much hardener.

thanks
Rich

I'm using spi clear now and plan on changing to spi epxoy after I use up what I have. I also know that most on here have experience with other products, and that my problem most likely is not brand related.

I have no experience with HOK KD3000 so I can't comment on that product. If you use SPI epoxy primer best practice is to prime before applying filler.

As to the price of hardener, I'm not sure why it makes a difference with SPI. A quart of SPI epoxy primer is $34.76 and a quart of SPI epoxy activator is $34.96. That's two sprayable quarts for $69.52 when mixed one-to-one. Turning it into 3 quarts of sealer using SPI urethane reducer is another $9.43 - 15.07 depending on speed (fast is cheapest, very slow is most expensive). Assuming you used the extra slow reducer, thee sprayable quarts costs $84.59.

From the TCP Global site, HOK KD3000 quart kits cost $39.46 each so two sprayable quarts is $78.92. Turning it into 3 quarts of sealer using extra slow reducer costs $16.38 so three sprayable quarts is $94.83. Maybe it's worth the extra ten bucks but I don't expect the owner of HOK to answer my calls when I have a problem.

Some mix 4 primer 1 hardener 2 reducer. SPI 1 epoxy 1 activator 1 reducer. Always best to get the tech sheet on whatever brand you're using.

Bob, thanks for the explaination, I didn't realize the final cost was that low, the hok kit does not yeild two quarts sprayable, it's only a 4 oz activator. so it's much more pricey.

about the filler, I did prime first.

Judging from HOK's tech sheet that primer is a totally different animal compared to SPI's epoxy. It lists it as an epoxy hybrid-I would bed similar to PPG's NCP270 that I used years ago. If you applied filler over it I hope you scratched it up good before application. I'm sure it has a much higher build than SPI epoxy but if it's anything like PPG's hybrid durability isn't even in the same ballpark. Don't mix product usage techniques between these two products, application, cure rate, build is all different.

If you're only going to use one product for priming, surfacing, and sealing epoxy would be my choice. SPI turbo primer may be closer to the HOK primer you were using though. Call the SPI tech line.
