Single stage black

Hello I have a iwatia lph400 with a 1.4 tip
And I’ve tryed to spray the newer stuff twice and still cannot get it to spray right.
The first time it was like spraying bed liner
Second time it was 70 and shop was 80 but it still wouldn’t lay out.
So I went to the shelf and had 20 oz of single stage from 2013 and it sprayed great like it should.
the new single stage paint is to thick to spray at 4 to 1.
I referred my wife’s Cousen to use spi and he had the same problem with his single stage black.
I talked to Barry he said he didn’t know what’s wrong to try 4-1-1 and give that a shot but
I already sprayed the old single stage Over the first coat of the new paint and had to hose it on to get it to flow out.
Any ideas why it won’t spray?
I used 4 different guns

I can't help you on yours, but I just had one of my customers spray a Dodge truck with the black S/S and it came out very nice. he's been painting for over 30 years and told me it was the best finish he has ever got with any S/S.
It could be a batch problem, but I better let Barry address that. I've never had any issues with any of the SPI product I've used or sold (distributor)

All the other gallons of it that I have sprayed sprayed great. Just this one gallon won’t it’s a lot thicker then the 2013 gallon I had.
My pressure is 26-32 for air pressure and around 3 full turns out on the fluid and fan is a 11” or so fan pattern.
Activator is 2103-4 slow production

The reason I said mix 4:1:1
The only thing that can cause this is solvent loss, and sealed can or not wide swings in temperature over and over can cause solvent loss.

If the product itself is cold when you spray it adding, the proper amount of reducer will slick It out but make it run.

How long have you had the gallon, and where was it stored?

I personally have sprayed each batch before we package it until the last six months and now two or three other guys spray and come get me to check or Brian.
My standard is one wet coat with 0 orange peel and no runs.

Hello looks like I baught it feb 7 this year and it’s been on the shelf it’s been cold but not freezing on the new can
And temp of paint was 80 deg I had heat on 24 hours before I painted. Outside temp was 70
The old can sat on The shelf since 2013 and it sprayed great going through the seasons
Thank you Barry.
My fenders need to be cut and buffed to get the waves out from hosing it on to try to get it to flow out but I’m running out of time to have the car ready for my Yellowstone trip and if I break through sanding and if I still cannot get the single stage to spray correct I dont have anymore old single stage to redo.
I still have the deck lid to fix I hope to get started fixing that this weekend and then will try the 4-1-1.

Will it have a different gloss or color mixing it 4-1-1-?

I sprayed a test with the August batch of Black SS using 2103 as the activator at 4:1. this is using an LPH 400 with a 1.4 tip at 2.5-2.6 turns out on the fluid, a 7inch or so fan and 28 psi at half trigger. check the link below for stir up and the actual spraying.

What was the metal temp? You've got paint temp and air temp, but what about metal temp? Or did I read that wrong?

Metal temp was also 80 same as the shop and paint and reducer was also 80. Idk.
I love spi products just this gallon really kicking my butt

I still have 2 gallons and a qt of the original Black SS and was asking SPI sales about the Activator and discussion about 'which" to use. Apparently Barry happens to be right there and because the early Black SS is 1:1 using UC Activator and the Newer 4:1 Black SS uses the Production Activator could have been a big problem, I suppose, because there IS a difference depending which one.
I realize most users Don't have older SPI products but incase you DO, might want to Ask First.

Thank you .
Yes the 1-1 was awesome
But the 4-1 from 2013 was just as good as the 1-1 only didn’t make 2 gallons mixed.
I used the 1-1 up 7 or 8 years ago and when I needed more they already switched to 4-1 and I almost used that up and feb7 this year I bought another gallon of ss black 4-1 mix ratio and that’s the one I’m having problems with the first time I sprayed it this year it was way to cold Barry and I figured out that was the problem so I waited tell it got to 70 deg and had heat on in my shop all day and night and then went to spray and it wasn’t spraying correctly so I tryed another paint gun and it did the same thing then i remembered I had a little left from before and I sprayed it heavy to get it to flow out hopefully but it didn’t but I was able to make it shine. So this winter I’m going to cut and buff the whole car since I never have.
This weekend I’m going to try to work on my deck lid and this weekend or next week I hope to spray it using the 4-1-1 that Barry suggested to try.

I was saving it to repaint my personal truck,
Someday.....
Problem with knowing how to paint is people keep wanting things painted.
Gets annoying you know. Can't ever seem to get to My projects. Lol..
Hopefully This year IS the year. Trucks just looking at me going "yeah, riiight".
Now I'm retired and have time, people Still want me to paint stuff.
What's a poor man to do ?
Uh, Paint.....
We're you on hotrodders back in the 2000's before the spi forum ?

Thank you .

Brian found the batch retention you bought and sprayed on the video.
Remember that 160-gallon batch; if one gallon was bad, every gallon in the batch is bad the batch is long gone from the August date.

Also, the reason I changed to 4.1 from 1.1
Are we had many complaints of I don't need 2 gallons sprayable

Yea I understand Barry.
I saw the video and thank you Brian.
All I know is how it’s spraying on my end
My gun sprays base and clear coat just fine and a really old gallon last 20 oz
But this gallon isn’t spraying like normal
Yes mike I’m on hotrodders still I’ve been there before spi. Yea I’ve had lots of people wanting me to paint their car also and I’ve had a lot of people from car groups at shows asking who painted my coupe I said I did

Is the reason the obvious answer or actual rationalization?
Just curious.
Shops never seem to complain, and most of the feedback was from lobbyists.
Cases also where they bought a 2-gallon kit and ran out, and all they wanted was a quart.
I'm learning two things in my old age; you can't please everyone as if it was ten years ago again, it would still be a 1.1 mix.
