some cool woodgrain

so i have been on this woodgraining kick since ive been doing it on alot of houses. well just when i thought someone would never want wood on their motorcycle.....
anyway, i got a customer who is a retired tugboat captain and thought this would be perfect and he was all over the idea. i wanted the wood to come out sort of like old worn teak. maybe like old pirate ship looking wood. the logo is copper leaf. i thought everything came out looking very realistic.

WOOOOOOOOW!!!!! That is awesome!!!

I don't think real wood would look that good! I wish I could do half that good.

thanks guys. the woodgrain thing is cool but can get a little repetitive on large things. doing the bike was cool because it let me put in planks and get a little more creative with it. i think it does help growing up in a family of woodworkers.

I can do almost anything with wood but taking paint and making it look like wood is more in the realm of being an artist. That rope border is incredible and I still stare at the pictures wondering how on earth you reproduced what you saw in your mind's eye onto that fairing and tank.

its funny really. if you only knew how easy it was to do. this is one job where i think its more technique than artistry. the rope was just a simple mask i made in corel and cut on my vinyl cutter then each twist was unmasked one at a time, shaded then remasked. the wood is just a simple technique i developed years ago. i can do all different types of wood by just tweaking colors and airbrushing more or less heavy of a grain. now i just need to find a shop doing a woody so i can say i did a car.

Jim, good god that is beautiful. Aside from having wood craftsman in your background you have outstanding natural talent. Amazing work that's for sure.

Wow, just wow!!! Amazing skills there, Jim. Very impressive.

I made a bike from timber once, for my daughter. But I wouldn't know where to begin with airbrushing!

been awhile since i added to this thread. as time goes on i have found myself slowly moving from bikes and cars to doing faux wood. the demand for it seems to be taking over. i started doing faux wood finish for a custom garage door company now. doors are all white vinyl and need to be done in a special heat reflective paint system. all waterbase and specifically for vinyl. i never thought i would say it but for water, its really impressive stuff. anyway i did a sample panel today. this is just a flat piece of 3/8" white pvc. azek type material that i painted. the other pic is the window section of one of the doors. everything is done by hand with a brush. no airbrushing.
