SPI 2k primer vaper 2.3

Hi again, I have just sprayed my second coat of spi 2k primer with a vaper 2.3. The only way I could get it to spray wet was with the fluid all the way open and the fan about 2 1/2 inches wide. Any wider fan pattern and it would go on dry. Is this normal to have that narrow of a fan? With the help of this forum it’s coming along very well. Thanks.
Mike

What was your PSI at the gun with the trigger pulled full open?
Did you remove the plastic screen in the bottom of the cup?
I spray the regular 2k primer with a 2.0 tip all the time, with no issues.

Pressure at wall 120. No strainer in the gun. Pressure at gun 30 with trigger pulled.

I've had 2 of those guns. First one sprayed great right out of the box. Second one had the same problem you are having. Trigger was not pulling the needle back out of the fluid tip far enough for full flow. Kind of like having the fluid knob turned in. I ended up modifying with a couple small washers between the back of the trigger and the needle.

I recently bought an Air Gunsa AZ3 HTE2 for spraying primer. Iwata makes them but they are very reasonably priced and I have sprayed both Polyester Primer and 2k primer through it without any issues.

The key for any spray gun to operate correctly is to be sure your compressor is putting out enough CFM to handle the gun's needs. For your gun you would need a minimum of 10 CFM at 30 PSI. More is better.

I guess I'll ask. Was it spraying like this right when you mixed the primer or was it on a second coat and the primer sat for a few min in the gun?

Also as stated before when you pull the trigger can you see the needle move back a good ways?

Yes I took the gun apart before using. It had manufacturing grease everywhere. I can definitely see the needle moving when I pull the trigger full open. It moves about 1/8 inch. Is there an adjustment on the nut shown in the 1st picture? The second picture shows the small nut with packing the way it arrived to me when purchased new. I just tightened it enough so the air flow needle would function smoothly.

I use to use the cheapest guns possible for primer. Always had the mentality “it’s just primer”. Years ago I got sick of issues and throwing guns away so I bought a quality gun just for primer. Havent looked back since.
Yep. I can understand the concept of buying a cheap primer gun until you use it every day.

I've have two vaper guns. I haven't had any of the mentioned problems. I used two of them at another shop that I was working at. No issues there either. For me they have outperformed the price I paid.

I'd say this is more of a gun defect honestly. I am not 100% on that, but even with the smallest of compressors outside of a pancake style, he'd still see a glimmer of hope for a few and then the primer would just not atomize correctly, but he'd still have a decent fan. I have painted complete cars with a crappy non oil compressors, it completely sucked, but the job got done.

Can we get a picture of the cap? I just want to see the holes.

I know people have had success with these guns, but I think they are made buy a few different manufactures. I know when I bought one years ago mine was chrome(not that that makes a difference)

You said you cleaned, but did you take the gun 100% apart? the fan adjuster and all?
