Going to repainting my black ford truck which is a single stage. It has a bunch of chips and oxidation and has been buffed in a lot. I’m curious to know will all single stage paints oxidize like this I am leaning towards spi black single stage or can do spi black base with universal clear all work will be done over spi epoxy probably marginal difference in chip resistance between the two?

Black is a natural UV fighter, and in short, this is why a black car will get hotter than other colors.
In a perfect world you would get rid of all the black left as it is dead, if not at
Least 99% of the color.

The smartest thing you will do to this truck
Is cover in epoxy after you deal with the base and use epoxy as a sealer before paint

Do all singles stages fad like this?
It depends on the grade you buy.
Also buffing often to keep gloss up will also help to kill the paint.

Awesome thanks Barry is the difference between the single stage and base clear about splitting hairs in durability and longevity with your products

A very good question and no 100% correct answer.
Now every class I have been in the instructor will say ss will not last as long as a base/clear because some pigments are exposed to the eliments.

Would integrate clear on last coat help? Yes, just like shooting the ss and next day shoot plain clear over it, how much? Like you say, if using a quality product probally splitting hairs.

I’m going to take a wild guess why more vehicles today are BC/CC application one being for easy repair ability of blending and the complete topcoat of a clear it’s intresting

I use SPI black base coat and cover with Euro 5000 clear, You will be well pleased with the spi black base or ss. I would go with base and clear.

One of the nicest jobs I have ever seen was visiting Rusty Gillis shop a few years ago and he applied 4 coat of SS Black and buffed like crazy.
Does t tend to have more depth to it than base clear? Kind of lake the old laquer used too?

Yes it does imho. I have had two cars win at Goodguys with SPI black single stage. The contrast with other black cars side by side is amazing.
May I ask if you mixed any clear in the last coat, or cleared it afterward. I saw mention in the tech manual about mixing some SPI clear in the last coat. I'd like to get that deep-water black that reminds you of many coats of hand-rubbed lacquer. However I'd also like to have the option to repair chips which I hear is much easier with SS vs. B/C is this will be a driver. Can I get the look and maintainability I'm hoping for with just the SS by itself? I was thinking I'd do 4 or 5 coats of the SS.

Just SS straight out of the can. My skill set is pretty basic and I try to keep it simple.

...just my opinion..b/ c is easier to repair and 5 coats of SS is to much build.
