SPI clear peel/chip off PPG Laquer Base?

After sandblast I epoxied and painted the dash with PPG Ford Dark Red (factory Match) This was about a year ago. I am in the assembly part of my build and I was assembling the dash when I noticed that the clear coat chipped and pealed really easy around the Ignition Key hole when I was installing the lock cylinder/ign. switch. Seems like around edges it flakes off if I work at it with my fingernail.

I had an issue with the base when I sprayed it. I was a single stage PPG Duracryl Paint patched to Ford Factory "Red Poly" code 71541 lacquer. It came out very flat and had no shine to it no matter what I did.. I made a last minute decision to shoot it all in SPI clear before my recoat window was up. It turned out beautiful and had the look we wanted. Universal Clear was sprayed when I was down to about three hours till the cutoff to the recoat window. I don't know if that was the issue or not. Maybe the base was too cured for the SPI to stick.

I need to repaint the dash area now because I don't trust it. Did I get to close to the window or do I find a different kind/brand of paint for the base?

You would have had better luck if the lacquer sat for a day before applying the clear. The factory dash colors weren't high gloss and on the dash tops some companies also used a different paint that was even flatter. I would talk to Barry to get his opinion on his clear over lacquer. There really is no recoat window for lacquer-it can be recoated at any time. For high gloss out of the gun your best bet would be to use a modern basecoat for the reshoot or a singlestage urethane. The last time I sprayed urethane clear over a lacquer was a few years back when a friend brought in some saddlebags and some paint from harley davidson-it was lacquer. I shot the bags with color and let it set a day before shooting the clear and he said it held up fine. I had no idea if it would work ok. Back in the 80's PPG and R&M both had urethane clears designed to sprayed over lacquer-I have no idea what the differences were compared to other clears.

From their TDS:
DDL single stage colors can be polished to a full gloss. Duracryl basecoat colors have formula comments that tell when clearcoat is required.

I would think think having the urethane basecoat would be the best option for the clear, but maybe its just getting the color in a basecoat instead of single stage?

We do this a fair amount of time but like Bob said, the lacquer has to have extra time to dry and even then there is a risk of adhesion being real strong.
Most shops that need to clear the dash like you did, I will advise let set a few days before clearing.

You may be in better shape then you think as the key holes can end up with extra coats of base with overlaps and it may have just had the adhesion broke there due to solvents in the base.

This was the first time I had ever shot Lacquer. According to the tech sheet, it says In the recoat window section "after 24 hours the color must be sanded and additional color applied". I was very close to this window when I clear coated it. It also says "May be clear coated with Duracryl hi performance clear and Delclear Acrylic urethane clear".

We do like the look of the gloss on the dash- If I go get some SS Urethane in the same color do I need to polish it to get it to be glossy? ( I have not shot any single stage other than this lacquer) It has so many curves and ridges on the dash I feel like that would be very hard to do.

Debating if I should just get some red basecoat then finish it with SPI Universal..Does a urethane single stage require polishing to get shine? I was under the impression it came out glossy and you could wet sand and buff if desired.

looks like the old schoold "hand rubbed" lacquer. It looked like you should have been able to cut and polish the lacquer.

It looks like if you ask for the basecoat they should be able to use that color formula in any blend you ask for, maybe just stay with a PPG line of base coat urethane to remove all doubt.

There's no need to buff a urethane singlestage if it looks good out of the gun-it will be glossy.
