Spray gun for dummys

D

What is the best gun for a beginner ? All I have now and have been practicing with is DeVillbiss startingline that has the gun for primers and another for bc and cc. I have been looking on line trying to figure out what to buy. I am at the stage with my car where I am ready to seal with epoxy and start the base and clear. I saw an Iwata extreme that I will provide a link to and would like any suggestions good or bad. also saw a Sata that could be bought for around 300.00 (used).

Someone on this forum gave me a link to an Iwata for 401.00 + shipping and does not come with cup but seems to be a good deal. http://www.tooldiscounter.com/ItemDisplay.cfm?lookup=IWA5550

This link is an Iwata extreme for 439.00 it does not come with cup either but is free shipping.

Which is the best for bc and cc 1.3 or 1.4 tip/nozzle

Any and all suggestions are appreciated

Dave

Dave, i sent you that link, shipping was $12.79 on the gun. look on ebay and can find a vapor cup that fits pretty cheep. Now with that being said I have a Warwick
he mini gun that can lay paint like glass.

http://www.johnsonautobodysupply.com/Warwick-904-HE-WB.html

cant speak for thier full size guns never used one, but with that being said you might ask Barry if he or someone else has tried one, it might be a more cost effective
alt, this also where my Iwata was shipped from, I know the previous link was for tool discounters but it shipped from Johnson Auto Body. Might want to call and see
what they say about this gun.

Dave, I did not mention it but my Iwata showed up with an adapter and the setup for 3m pps cup system and one disposable liner..

Mike ,

I was right in the middle of typing the post and knew if I went to look and see who sent me that link I would probably have to start over and for the life of me I could not remember without looking. Sorry about that. A question about the Warwick, will it lay down base and clear coats good? I really don't care what brand I get what I want mostly is something that is very user friendly. thanks so much for the info

Dave

Dave, My mini he ajusts just like the Iwata and sprays excellent, very friendly to use, and yes it lays bc/cc really good. I was in the same dillima as you are about
buying a new gun except i have a few small projects that come along here and there so i waited and bought the Iwata. But before the wife gave the go ahead
to buy the gun I have now, I looked at the warwick and tried to find any negitive reviews and there was none just praises, in fact my warwick and iwata are the
only spray guns allowed in the spare bedroom for storage after a through cleaning and allowed to dry, garage can get pretty hot about now. Do your research on the
gun you are buying first. Give me some time and I will send you a pic of some things painted today with the warwick. Damn technology always have to ask my son how
to post pics.

Then the warwick is mostly for small items and you got the Iwata for larger stuff.
I found a 1000ml cup for a Vaper 19100 or 19200 it looks like it may fit the Iwata 400. Do you know if it will or not?
thanks
Dave

I use a 1.3 for base and a 1.4 for high solids clears. my base gun is an iwata supernova(1.3) and it can spray metallic like no other and I use a sata jet 3000 RP(1.4) for clear.

I used an iwata 400(1.3) at tech school for both and it shot well enough for insurance work. I would think this is your best bet and if you never paint another car you wont have any trouble re-selling it

Hey thanks for the info.
Which do you think would be best for the SPI universal clear the Iwata 400 1.3 or 1.4?

I prefer a 1.4 for clear. but it wont atomize metallic bc as well as a 1.3. its a double egded sword. But since your not gonna paint full time ide go for the 1.4. you could chase this problem in circles for weeks you will just have to commit to a gun, and 80% of the finished product is on the painter anyways, dont count on your gun to make the paint job :)

80% is on me yea that's what scares me LOL . Thanks so much for your help and yea your right I just need to get the gun and practice, practice and practice.

good to see ya upgrading yer gun and willing to spend some cash for one. I haven't used an iwata, but im willing to venture and say you'll be amazed at the quality of how it sprays product and with the practice with the startingline the quality will prolly come quick.

Thanks Tom for the encouragement, In the beginning I had thought about giving the startingline a go with the base and clear but due to the cost I quickly changed my mind and thought I had better give myself all the help I can with some better equipment.
Dave

I haven't used an iwate or warwick, but im willing to guarantee yer gonna see a major improvement in quality of the fan pattern and atomization over the startingine for either gun. the practice you have with the startingline is gonna help with the new gon ya get.

Yes I think you are right Tom. I just pulled the trigger and ordered an Iwata LPH 400 LV # 5553-R 1.4 tip comes with 1000ml alm cup and regulator I think it is RTI micrometer regulator. Anyway it is a diaphragm regulator. Talked with Barry and he said it would do primers base and clear it might in his hand but I don't know with it in my hand. Thanks again everyone for all the help.
Dave.

Here is a link to it.

Found out to that this distributor is only about 50 miles from me no telling where it will be shipped from though.

glad you went for it, you will see right away that a good gun is worth the money. hope it all works out.

I love my iwatas, night and day over the cheapies I was using. I don't know that starting with one I'd have seen the difference but in upgrading I noticed the finer points. And my cheapies I can't get parts for. I just sent my lph-440 back to iwata for a full rebuild and I thinkit was about $80.

going from a startingline to a finishline 3 to a copper tekna sure had me appreciating the R&D put into them. also once I finished my 1st paint job with the copper tekna I stopped complaining about the price!!:encouragement:

Dave, glad to see you bought the Iwata, as for the othe gun,a great choice. I was trying to help with a less costly alt to look into. I was not trying to mislead you at all. I was not trying to start a debate or be trampled on for recommeding that gun. Good luck on your project.
