Spraying clear with my Iwata LPH-400 LVX

Ok, I've been spraying clear with my Devilbliss PLUS for awhile now. I use an Iwata for my bases. It is the LPH-400LVX with an orange cap.

I've been debating on ordering a 1.4 tip and a silver cap and trying to use it for my clear also.

Any tips on this?

I have used the plus gun for clear, seemed to work fairly well. In fact, I think many guns work well and if you are cutting and buffing anyway, seems many people are splitting hairs as to what gun is the tops for clearing. I find if you have a high quality gun, like a sata or iwata, etc, it's the person behind the gun often and the appropriate adjustments to material being sprayed. Some may have the latest gun but yield better results with an older gun, because they are familiar with it.

my biggest thing is pressures and material usage. I just figured with going from 45psi to maybe 25psi(or lower) I could maybe save some material. Plus lower pressures in my garage, less overspray, possibly less dust.

I dont know, im bored and just thinking right now. I can typically lay it down with the PLUS. But if my toughts are correct and the Iwata will atomize it just as well then why not give it a shot. Plus I love the way the Iwata feels!

It's only money right?...I hear you, I buy and test guns all the time becuase I'm a nut with this stuff. I have way too many guns, but buy them out of curiousity more so then necessity. Try the iwata with the 1.4, I have a 1.3 in mine and it works fine for clear, then again, I can say that my sata 3000 hvlp works just as well for me.

Danp76, What's the verdict on the the new SATA 4000 gun you got? How do you like it so far compared to your other guns, I'm curious about that gun.

Thanks in advance.

Jorge.

I think you got it backwards, the Iwata is a great clear gun, that's all I use it for now,
ALL my other guns spray base better than my Iwata, so to me it's a clear gun only.
Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of people useing it for base and love it for that,
but I've also read many threads where people have had the same problems as me
with the Iwata being real easy to stripe and mottle with base.
I can make it work by upping the pressure but why fight it if my other guns
like my Astro always works easier. I'll just use the Iwata for clear, which it works better
at than anything I've tried.

See I've wondered that because I loved the way my finishline 3 spraying metallics, but I kind of got beat up on another forum when I mentioned it.

Maybe on my next project I will switch it up! I will use my plus for the base and the iwata for the clear.

i have yet to have a problem with the lph400. guns don't cause stripes in base the painter does. i've shot gm code 16 silver with it and also sun glow metallic .
there are many other problems created by cheap guns other than the looks. keep using them and you will understand.

Shine, that's true but all I'm saying is my Astro never gave me
a stripe and the Iwata did, several times.
I'm not a pro, so I'll use what works the easiest.
I figure if Iwata was such a great base gun, they wouldn't have had to
come out with a special cap for base.:)

Yep!
I also have the purple cap for base and use it sometimes on small base touch-ups,
it works real good for that.

FYI: My best friend uses an Iwata for base and he ups the pressure to 25 PSI
to eliminate any striping or motteling chances. That seems to be the best solution.
He has no problems, the Iwata will work fine for base if you use it right.
I'm just old and stick with what works for me (LOL)
I've used the same base gun for over 15 yrs now, I should be
good with it by now I guess.

Now this is interesting. I have heard the Plus is supposed to be a fantastic clear gun for the money. Thats why I bought one. It took some getting used to, but I can now lay clear with OEM like orange peel. I'm using it for base now too, because I do not own a base gun. I've been eyeballing a LPH400 to use for base. I hate the amount of over spray the Plus creates, but I can deal with it since the results are pretty good. So would the general consensus be to use a Plus for base, and LPH for clear???

Thank you shine. Thats what I like about my cheap devilbliss guns!

Cool, so I'll order a silver cap and a 1.4 nozzle.

Are the nozzles different for the LVX? Or is that just the orange cap.
