This was my first attempt to painting a complete vehicle. My 2002 Dodge 1500 clear was flaking off of the roof and bed rails. With all the help and reading on the Forum here I took it down to the metal starting with the truck bed, then the roof and back of cab and finally the rest of the cab. I refinished the Mirrors, plastic bumper parts and the frame that I could get to all with black epoxy. Also painted the rims with color matching the lower color on the body. I did all this in my driveway and my aunts vacant garage next door with a long air hose between houses.

Started removing the paint whenever I had time.

Grinder made marks in the metals that would really show up once the epoxy was laid down.

During blocking of the epoxy, going to need lots more build.

This side after a few more coats of epoxy.

Made a box with casters to move the Bed around. I used black, white and red epoxy often mixing so when sanding I could tell which layer I was in.

This was after 2 coats of SPI Bright White base and 7 coats of UV 4+3.

Rator Liner over SPI Black Epoxy, bought a 6 liter kit but only used 3 1/2.

Next was roof and back of cab. Had to use a small scaffold to be able to reach all of the roof.

Sanded thru my clear in to the base getting a bug out and resprayed base and it wrinkled. I activated all my base and was put in the sun before I resprayed the base.

Next was the cab and hood.

The front fenders and hood was painted prior as the color didnt match the rest of the body when I first bought the truck new.

Pretty much finished except to regap the front bumper and some of the weatherstripping once I find replacement christmast trees as I learned they were called. Also replace the headlights, taillights, lugnuts, Brake rotors and brakes and painted the calipers and a new fuel pump and a new grill.

Another good example of why those of use capable should just do our own work.
Sure it was a lot of work, but damn sure would have cost a lot more to have done with less prep work & lower quality materials.

I really don't like stripping white vehicles. For some reason they peel easy in places, and other spots need a jack hammer to get the paint off. Never understood it. Your truck looks great and will outlast anything the factory puts out. Great job!

My first paint job was MY truck 10 years ago- came out great - I decided to help my barber out by painting his hot rod - did it for Free haircuts the rest of my life - went bald 5 years later - he still has a great looking hot rod and I’ve earned a reputation as being inexpensive- been stuck in my garage for pennies for the last 9 years - my fault ! Do yourself a favor and set an hourly rate now ! High enough to keep the bottom feeders away if this is something you want to do - wait for the family to come calling for every little door ding
