i have to agree with crash and alot of you. back when i was doing cars and bikes, if someone wanted me to use something other than spi then i would simply tell them to go find another shop. its not so much being able to spray another clear. sure i can spray others but every clear reacts different. if you are sticking to a simple 2 coat job then ok it might be fine but many clears dont like to be pushed beyond that. who knows if it will solvent pop, shrink back, peel, etc when doing something custom with 3,4,5 or more coats. i dont need to start experimenting with another clear that i dont know inside and out.

Ok Thanks for all the feedback...a little more than I was expecting...

The base is HOK -----@--------- Silver, so I figure 3 coats using medium reducer. It must be cleared within 4 hours, so then 5 coats of Euro using slow activator and slow reducer. It should be about 80 degrees.

I was concerned about applying 8 coats of paint in a 7-8 hour time period so that's why I was thinking medium reducer for the base.
This may not be concern especially if surface temps are warm. Slow reducer allows thinner coats to be applied, and thinner coats give up their solvent quicker even though it's slower. I personally do not recommend 870 in a metallic unless temps are cool, it's been my experience that it just doesn't work well with the basecoat I use.

I didn't think Shimrin 2 had to be re-coated that quickly. I'd like to know why they say that. One thing you may want to try Ken is using an intercoat after the last coat of base. If it has to be re-coated, spray a single coat of inter then clear the next day.
Maybe Jim C can weigh in on this.

If it does I am in trouble, lol

well its been some years since i used hok or read their tech manual BUT i have shot a ton of it on a daily basis for prob 15 years and i dont think i ever got clear on any of it in a 4 hour window. most sat in base for days or weeks while artwork was being done then clear went on. never had clear delam off base in my life. as a matter of fact with hok being a paint system designed for doing artwork and graphics i dont see how they can ever say that the base has a 4 hour recoat window. you could never use their product if that was the case. i had one project here i remember that was based in silver and it sat on a shelf for 6 mos. took it down, blew it off, gave it a wipe down, did artwork and cleared it. no issue.

Here is some of Jimc's work i bought 15 to 20 years ago for our both at shows.
I would not know where to start.
