Taping over spi universal clear

Hello everyone, I am progressing on my project and am getting ready to spray the roof. I have a motobase base coat and spi universal clear. I am doing the roof a different color than the body. How long should I wait before I tape the roof off to do the body ( I assume the paint and clear needs to dry ) . How long can I leave the tape and masking on? I am doing the roof and than plan to seal the body in spi reduced epoxy. So it might stay masked and taped for several days depending on my schedule. I’m not sure if I have to remove it if it might sit for a week or so.
thanks
Dave

I just sprayed my dash this morning and the temp in the shop was high 80’s. Probably 2 -3 coats of base and 3 coats of clear.

one thing i forgot to ask was if you were sanding and buffing. if you are i would do that after the car is all done. dont do the roof, sand and buff then mask off and do the other color. just get the clear on, wait a couple days then mask and do the second color. this way if the tape leaves slight marks in clear, it wont matter since you'll be sanding and buffing it anyway. tape marks will show up on sanded and buffed universal for a long time so dont tape on the finished clear. they dont show up anywhere near as bad on just a sprayed finish.

Just to give you something to think about, the most common way something like yours is done, would be to seal the entire body. Then mask off so you can base the roof, allow it to dry for several hours minimum, then mask off the roof and spray your second color of base. Remove the mask as soon as you finish the second color. Then proceed with clear. That is the simplest most common way it's done. Block off a day for the the two base colors then clear it next day or when it is convienent for you. Then proceed with color sanding and buffing (if you choose to).

thanks guys.
chris , I am spraying the roof in a base coat clear coat. The body is being sprayed in a single stage black. The brake line for the paint will be under the belt line molding. It’s a 53 Chevy.

Base & Clear same day is what i'm questioning.
Nevermind, i did it on my red car half at a time no problems. Was hot like your temps.

Oh ok. Makes more sense now.:) Follow Jim's good advice. And when you do tape the freshly painted area, try to minimize the amount of tape you use. Meaning use more masking paper rather than taping up smaller areas and voids between masking paper. Overlap your paper. Hope that makes sense. Just try to minimize the amount of tape on the fresh clear. Don't tape it until just before you get ready to do the body and get it off as soon as you can when you finish the body. That's important.

am I not able to do both in the same day , should I wait? I didn’t even look at the motobase can to see if it said how long to wait before clear.
thanks for the input everyone!

Ideally, you wait overnight. If you shot base early and cleared an hour or two later it will be fine in warm weather, but the longer you wait after base, the better.
