Hi all, What is the best way to make/mix up touch up paint and store it?... I have some dupont chromabase and spi clear..Is it best to apply the bc, let dry, then apply cc with as many coats as needed?.. How long will activated bc be usable for say in a glass jar with a metal lid sealed with tape?.. As for the clearcoat, is there any way to mix up a small amount and save in a small sealed container?.. By touch up paint, i mean applying with a tiny brush or anything the alike....Thank you

As long as no activator is added, it can lasts years. Once you mix in the activator you are on the clock, a few hours and it will start to thicken and then become completely solid.

I have had some activated Dupont bc in a sealed glass jar for at least 2 weeks...The viscosity appears to be about normal...Im not sure if it is still good or not.....One of the reasons for my thread...THanks

When you say "activated" are you talking about a catalyst (hardener) or just the base coat reducer? If just DuPont's reducer, then you should have no problems with it thickening if sealed. If catalyzed, then better ask Berry.

It might be classified as hardener/activator.....Dupont actually calls it "basemaker"... When i say activated, i mean ready to spray

Their basemaker is more or less just reducer, you should be able to store that as long as you want. I have some reduced Standox that is almost 30 years old, and it is still fine.

Ahh, okay, thank you!... What about touch up clear coat?..Does it have the same storage characteristics?..Or should i just mix it up as needed....Literally droplets....

You have to mix the clear as needed. I use micro beakers that I bought on eBay to mix small amounts with reasonable accuracy.

You can buy digital scales on eBay for $15 that measure down to 0.1 grams. There are 4 drops of paint per .1 gram, so it is easy to get very accurate.

I'm not sure what volume 4 "drops" of paint are, but using a scale to measure paint is quite inaccurate as paint does not have a specific gravity of 1, so I would recommend against this route.
Not speaking directly to you Lizer. :)
It would only be accurate if you were mixing something according to a by the weight formula, I.E. mixing a basecoat according to a formula. Only way you can mix by weight with something that is normally mixed by volume is to weigh a specific volume of each component and then do the math to get what weight is needed for the volume required. Complicated and only worth doing if you are doing this day in and out.
